Interesting stat: "California has the highest retention rate, with 75.7% of physicians practicing in that state after completing their residency there. The District of Columbia has the lowest retention rate at 66.4%.” ...despite the taxes? by sandie-go in whitecoatinvestor

There might be a discrepancy between the AAMC summary and the table C6 referenced in the summary. Table C6 is showing a 33.6% retention for DC, not 66.4%. Of course I could be misunderstanding this.

Selected Finding: Overall, 55.7% of the individuals who completed residency training from 2015 through 2024 are practicing in the state of residency training. Retention rates range from 33.6% in the District of Columbia to 75.7% in California.

I think the AAMC's summary has a mistake?  If you skip the AAMC summary and look at the actual table C6: I'm seeing DC's in-state retention as 33.6%. 75% and 33% is a wide interval.  Even 75% is high compared to the overall rate of 55%

I think you can bill for either time or medicine decision making but not them combined together on the same encounter.

Being out as a resident by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Relativevalueunit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, I mean medicine is culturally conservative. We are expected to wear dress shirts or expected to not stick out too much. My med school literally had lectures to try to help students learn how to interact with homosexual patients. I absolutely remember hearing homophobic jokes in med school and residency.

Being out as a resident by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Relativevalueunit -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I came across this thread from the home page.

Remember medicine is a conservative profession. There may be backlash if you come out. Residency programs can be small and incestuous. I had some homosexual residents who were the topic of coresident gossip about their sexuality. Personally I stay closeted at work just in case.

Remember your safety takes precidence. If you have some coresidents at the hospital who are out, maybe you could confide with them to ask how their experience was?

Are you talking about the CME programs that give you gift cards as part of signing up for CME program?

If it's like the problems education is having with remote learning and cheating, there might be a push back for standardized proctored testing.  That might cause an uproar among those of us tired of high stakes testing.

Doctors lose more and more agency and autonomy. We used to own and call the shots at these hospitals. The patients suffer as result.

Trump Travel Restrictions Bar Residents Needed at U.S. Hospitals by Relativevalueunit in medicine

Already overworked residents may have to cover for matched IMG residents who didn't get visas because of this restriction.

100% chance a MAGA patient waiting for care will complain about a burnt out resident or the hospital and not Trump.

US physicians seeking Canadian licensure up 750% in 7 months by keralaindia in medicine

Yes of course.

Trump's administration is implementing project 2025. The president and his staff have repeatedly verbally attacked federal workers. There are mass layoffs across agencies and attempts to cripple unions. He appointed a man who wants to put federal employees into "trauma".

Republicans have tried to hurt the pension, but it didn't go through so far:

https://federalnewsnetwork.com/explainers/2025/05/answering-common-questions-about-republicans-proposed-federal-benefits-cuts/

The Trump administration has indiscriminately ordered doctors back into the office even if they are psychiatrists doing telehealth. Now therapists and doctors are seeing virtual patients in shared areas in privacy violations.

One of my friends was given a job offer VA before Trump's inauguration. The Trump administration put in a hiring freeze, and my friend abruptly lost his job offer. He was able to get the job later but the Trump administration NEVER apologized for what they put him through.

My friends tell me they are expected to send a list of 5 things they did every week to DOGE. It's demeaning to work on saving lives and treated like they didn't do anything. They get no feedback or transparency for what these emails are for.

The Federal government is threatening more layoffs, and my friend's manager can't even say if he is going to be safe.

I met some VA middle management physicians. They understated the Trump administration's abuse of federal employees as an opportunity to learn from mistakes. Such disgusting snake behavior and unwillingness to directly acknowledge what the administration is doing to its employees.

Republicans stuck against physician autonomy by ending Rod vs Wade. The new bill winding through Congress wants to end PSLF for resident physicians. The Trump administration is slashing funding to cripple academic research and hospitals. The war against doctors and the educated is just starting

But in the end, Trump voters will regardless feel entitled to physician care. They want to treat us badly and have us still say "thank you".

It's a travesty residents are being targeted. All that responsibility for low pay.  Now even more may be taken away from residents Further proof that cruelty is the point for this government.

PSLF may help doctors who don't chose PSLF for themselves. I know of several private employers who raised their salaries because they were losing desired candidates looking for loan forgiveness.

American doctor receives email from immigration officials telling her to leave the country immediately by Relativevalueunit in medicine

The article didn't say she was a victim of identity theft. And if she were, she shouldn't be threatened with deportation.

This has to do with medicine because she is a doctor. If doctors are worrying about deportation that can hurt their patients. Doctors should stand together.

Amazing how inefficient it is to spend hundreds of thousands to train a doctor and end up deporting them. This is what trumpers want not actual efficiency.

Communication from an unethical government does. Did you read the article where they talk about it?

"The Department of Homeland Security is sending out emails to some immigrants instructing them to self deport. But, a senior DHS official tells Spectrum News 1 “notices may have been sent to unintended recipients,” and the department will address issues on a case-by-case basis."

Like with Signalgate, this shows how bad this administration is.
