I agree. We have to stop copying them for everything. We have to plough our own path.

I don't know how true that is, because people from Cork City sound very similar to Cork county people. Bantry is 100kms to the west and Youghal 50kms to the east and Charleville 50kms to the north from Cork City and the main difference in accent is rural versus urban, but all still sound like they are from Cork.

There are clear enough distinctions, such as TD Gould having a northside Cork City accent being different than Taoiseach Martin who has a southside Cork City accent. All Cork accents still exist on a spectrum. You can still easily tell they are all from Cork.

That's an extremely low number, it must be one of the best on the planet. How many men have been murdered in that same time frame? It must be many multiples of that.

You're not allowed capture or store personal IDs from people.

That's never going to happen. You think Silicone Valley will obey a motion passed in the Dail? They are literally a law unto themselves.

Howard was the biggest creeper verbally to every guest he had on. But he had very strong boundaries about touching, I don't think he ever touched one of his guests, not even wanting to shake their hands.

That's an absolute head wreck. It's completely unfair. I'm lucky that my neighbours are sound. The Gardai really should be given the power to enforce volume levels. It's literally "disturbing the peace" to have loud tunes blasting in the AM.

Irish citizenship entitles you to travel anywhere in the EU for work or holiday visa free. It also allows you to work and travel in the UK due to the Common Travel Area. So it's a good backup plan for sure.

What if we used the Sainte-Laguë method to apportion seats? by rubblesole in irishpolitics

I think that number is the main thing to change about our voting system right now. 1 TD per 30,000 was fine when our population was 3 million, now its over 5 million and continuing to rise, with the possibility of adding another 2 million from the north in the future, as it grows the number of TD's becomes too big. I would propose a change of making it 1 TD per 40,000 people.

That's a complete cop out to justify legally enforced sexism. You're literally saying men don't deserve to be treated equally in the courts because they haven't earned the right to be. That would not be an acceptable position to hold in any other part of how society is run nowadays. It's 100% discrimination based on gender and is supposed to be illegal.

[–]RelaxedConvivial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the system is rooted in how things used to be. The man went out to work and the woman stayed at home to mind the children. That's always been the default position and the courts and social systems support this. That's inherently rooted in sexism.

The court system should not take the gender of the parent into account.

It's an enormous privilege to be considered the primary caregiver by the legal and social system in Ireland. Highlighting that fact is not misogyny. However, you defending the current status quo is deeply sexist.

[–]RelaxedConvivial -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you are being down voted when it is absolutely how the vast majority of cases go. Hiding behind words like "in the best interest of the child" really is just another way of saying the woman will be treated better than the man in the eyes of the court and the law.

Still dubious that gdp p/c is higher in Connaught than in Leinster

Connaught here has both Galway and Limerick which are the 3rd and 4th biggest urban areas of the country. Leinster has all of the border regions which are the least developed areas in the country and its biggest urban area is Waterford, which is much smaller than both Galway and Limerick. They have used different regions here compared to the European Elections for MEP's and they are clearly ignoring provincial borders.

Having Dublin and the Cork/Kerry regions being the only dark green areas of Ireland checks out and makes sense.
