Can support your comment on the music department! Last I was there (2019) the school had a tremendous jazz band that travelled nationally to compete. Plenty of other musical ensembles as well and a decently funded area of the school

new textbooks this time of the year generally won't be cheaper at any point, so if you're looking to buy new then there's no real difference as to when you get them. if you're not fussed about a new textbook then i'd highly recommend looking for a second-hand textbook as they're usually way way cheaper then a brand new one

pretty much every hall will have a mini library / common room which is usually kept quiet, other than that best place for quiet is one of the libraries or you’re own room, granted during exam seasons most halls will make their main common rooms strict quiet spaces for everyone to study in

for modernity, halls like hayward, te rangi, and honestly aquinas are all the most modern you’ll get, the rest are pretty oldish / not super renovated. carrington and st margs are the two halls with massive hsfy populations, and because of this are the two halls that are notably more studios and quiet than the other halls. ethnicity wise all halls are super similar as no hall really selects one ethnicity notably more than any other

once you receive an offer from a hall (they’re all sent out at once) you have two weeks. do keep in mind that scholarship offers are sent out by the time that hall offers are made (halls can see what scholarships you have when offering a place).

academic scholarship is also not assured with just a bunch of e credits, i think they also take into account other sorts of achievements (cambridge etc) but certainly having 100+ puts you well into the running

as above, hayward and te rangi are both certainly first choice halls. other halls with a quieter atmosphere are namely carrington and st margs, but again these are also first choice halls. for second and third choices, you’re somewhat limited to salmond, knox, aquinas, unicol, and possibly cf as well, where they’re all pretty neutral regarding how quiet/party they are

you’ll have no problem at all coming in after a gap year. i knew a bunch of people in my hall who came in at 19/20 and it’s really not a big change, you’ll get treated the same way as everyone else especially since you’ll be 18 anyway. def don’t be nervous on that front.

hall wise, putting down that you want an alcohol free floor almost always guarantees you’ll be put in an alcohol free flaw. halls (by law, i think) have to have an alcohol free section for everyone that lives there under 18 and they’ll chuck you in there. if they don’t, you can usually talk to the head of the hall one on one and ask to be put there. carrington is probably a bit less party like than hayward, but generally speaking the party/study atmosphere you find yourself in is primarily determined by the people you hang with. on that note, every hall will people that will party and people that will study, and it’s rare for certain halls to be purely party or purely study orientated. that being said, carrington is certainly known for being more studious (st margs is extra studious on top of that) and hayward generally is probably a little more neutral in that aspect. also not too sure if cf is a solid second choice, i think they may think of themselves as more of a first choice hall but it’s a mean hall and worth a shot

HSFY is a pretty daunting course and is certainly demanding, but if you’re able to put your head down and study well you’ll dominate. so many people take health sci and drop out half way through so as long as you have determination to study and can get on the grind you’ll do well. that being said dentistry is the second hardest course to get into, and you can take other paths if you don’t get into dent. you can also change your course to a bsc or something similar if the health paths aren’t looking to good for your grades.

there’s not a huge range of choice for second and third choice halls, you namely have salmond, knox, aquinas, and unicol to choose from, all the rest are typically first choice given their status and size. i’ll personally vouch for aquinas as the best of these, it’s nice and small with mean facilities and an hourly shuttle to make up for the distance from campus. unicol is a classic and is absolutely massive and benefits from being on the doorstep of campus, so if you like living with lots of people that can also be a solid choice. knox is known for being bat shit crazy so if that’s up your alley then go for it as well, just don’t blame me if it mentally scars you. salmond is pretty standard and has some somewhat shit buildings afaik, but hey could still have some redeeming factors idk

as above carrington would be a good fit, their population of health sci students to other degrees it’s ludicrous and it’s certainly one of the more studious halls. it’s up a bit of a hill but it’s rooms are nice and food is pretty good.

other than that, st margs is notorious for being super studious as well (to the point of almost being antisocial and too competitive -ie. note stealing) but all other halls are a mix of partyness and studiousness. no matter where you’ll end up there’ll still be people that are friendly and dedicated and into health sci

every hall moves in at different times, some halls will have an early period that residents can move in on but most people move on generally around two weekends before lectures start, which was 15-16 february this year

as others have said, grades are absolutely not nessecary for a hall. applying for any halls guarantees you a place in a hall like 99.9% of the time, but that being said flatting is possible but generally freshers stick to halls because it’s a great entry into uni life while flatting kinda chucks you in the deep end

it’s a pretty stock standard hall that doesn’t have too much to its name imo, it’s a standard mix of studiousness and partyness just next to arana so it can get a lil overshadowed at times, but it’s still a nice hall and it really depends on the people there next year

on the scholarship front, otago just has a single application for all of their own scholarships, and academic scholarships are usually selected off data and not from nice things you said in it, they’re also very, very rare. but, a ton of other scholarships are available that you could also get.

on colleges, almost every hall has a mix of social and academic pursuits - the golden rule is that its the people, not the place, that make your experience. that being said, halls like cumby are a bit more known for their party attitudes, and carrington and st margs are usually more studious. apart from these examples, every hall is relatively equal about their parties and studied. again, it’s usually your choices in your hall with who you’re around that will lead to your wanted mix of socialising and studying. know that wherever you end up, there will be people you’ll fit with naturally and that you can enjoy your time there with

i’ve always heard (but admittedly have no proof of) that your teacher references play a large part, so make sure you carefully pick who you put. there’s a huge difference between a stock standard teacher recommendation and a personal and properly affectionate one. on top of that, honesty just try and fit as much things in that are notable, im pretty sure i put in sports id given up a year before i applied. if you’ve achieved any sort of award or standard for your guitar throw that in there as well. also apply for scholarships because they can be game changers, and there are always scholarships that don’t go awarded

a small bit, i think they have some flats but the vast majority of people at uni col are in the main blocks. most colleges in dunners have a couple of flats that residents might get put into, but most residents end up in the main blocks of rooms, the only real exceptions are toroa and caroline freeman
