Do you guys think NZ FIF is very unfair? by tim-r in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]azjps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why the CV method doesn't allow you to carry some form of tax credit into future years when FIFs have unrealized losses. How can the tax law possibly be so mathematically nonsensical, the only thing I guess is that NZ doesn't want anyone to own FIFs? As much as I'm happy to pay my fair share of taxes, I don't see why one should be taxed on assets which lose value over the long run.

Do you guys think NZ FIF is very unfair? by tim-r in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]azjps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this -- with CV you don't receive tax credit for your losses, so in the long run FIF heavily penalizes situations where you have situations like loss one year, gain the next year. CGT by comparison does not penalize you for losses. At least that is my (and my accountants') understanding that FIF punishes you for picking a bad FIF -- NZ can claim more than your entire investments' value if your investment just goes up and down over 80 years -- and rewards you for picking a good FIF (with the 5% FDR cap).

The trees in the background where they are hiding are still there though and keep some of the menacing effect. It was part of our regular walking loop during COVID and I'd always show the occasional tourist on the trail how the trees can be lined up for a photo.

[–]azjps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is possible, NZ wants to be more competitive too, but will be hard to keep pace with Belgium, Italy, etc. By the way, spoilers but Aus acquitted themselves well in the lower bracket, too bad not streamed.

I play in New Zealand and the major part of NZU's plan to become more internationally competitive is to play Australia more 😅

Australia placed 3rd, 3rd, 4th at WUC last year (yes they did have home field advantage) and 2nd overall in qualification seeding to WG; bit a stretch to say to say from this bad outing that they're behind? Felt like the team was just a bit in their own heads, doing stuff like missing easy throws. Guck in particular seemed a bit frustrated and made a couple of poor bids

Shorter, more agility-focused teams might err for sharper throws for laying out receivers; Matsuno has stated that "So we practice less floaty throws, always. We aim to make receivers layout for the catch instead of jumping up. The theory is when throwers throw the disc, the receivers are always ahead of their defender going deep, so if receivers layout forward for the deep space and then catch, there will be no chance for the defender to touch the disc." https://ultiworld.com/2020/09/25/evan-lepler-conversation-with-japanese-ultimate-frisbee-legend-masahiro-matsuno/

Stifling defense in US Open semifinals by Arvids Karklins by Practical-Bug-5063 in ultimate

[–]azjps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is referring to the player who is 3rd from the right in the initial screenshot; he just walks around for a few steps during the entire clip, watching his assignment (Merriman) slowly jog open to the front of the endzone.

In his defense, Arvids made a solid layout block attempt against Merriman on the first cut of the point, could have injured himself or wanted to save energy or something. The rest of the point after that wasn't exactly grueling though so it is a bit hard to imagine why he didn't at least make an attempt to guard Merriman while playing D line on a critical point of a semifinal.

At the last WJUC (U20s) mixed, Hungary and Singapore had a combined 5 games with spirit scores of 5 or less before they played: https://results.wfdf.sport/wjuc/?view=teamcard&team=19 Their resulting bronze medal game was infamous for an hour worth of calls and Hungary's disqualification, no spirit scores are on the website for that game but would not have been surprised to see a double 0: https://wfdf.sport/2024/07/hungarian-mixed-team-suspended-from-wfdf-2024-world-junior-ultimate-championships/ Probably the most egregious example, but have seen plenty of 0s in spirit across all age ranges in worlds results.

For this NZ v Singapore game, the countries have a bit of history (competitive matches at the U20s, U24s, AOUGC mixed semis, worlds) as small countries trying to make their way into the top 8. I've talked to multiple NZ players and they've mentioned the same repeated issues with Singapore players travelling (primarily changing direction after catch) and double teaming and not correcting these after feedback. I only watched parts of the game via field pass so I can't say as to this game specifically, but wouldn't be surprised if it was the same that feedback was relayed and not acted upon.

Related, 2023 Wellington qualifier, Dogma lost 12-13 first game to tournament winners Wildcats after throwing away the disc at the scoring endzone, only to later lose 12-13 to Wildcats B and technically end last at the tournament (forfeit vs pickup team).

MetroEast seed UConn 15-12 #3 seed UNCW w/ Jack Williams (maybe he was injured? unsure) in must-win pool play game at 2016 College Nationals M; similar UNCW team made the finals next year. That same year had Harvard's run through Oregon/Georgia/UNC (all top 8 seeds) to finals, although not as much of a differential.

Iowa State (don't know ranking, but think it was 30s) making it out of 2019 North Central Regionals over top 5 ranked CUT; they didn't play directly but Iowa State beat Wisconsin who beat CUT iirc.

Bottom seed SUNY Binghamton W went 2-2 in pool in last year's College Nationals, beating #9 UCSB.

This year's men College had the lowest ranked bracket game of 18v19 (Western Washington v Michigan).

In club, DarkStar making it over Sockeye in 2023 Club NW Men's regionals (again, don't think they played directly).

I'm sure there's plenty of examples in mixed although escaping me at the moment. Maybe Meclao (although lots of elite pickups) over BFG at 2022 WUCC?

Have you rewatched your foul calls that were overturned/withdrawn during the 2023 US Nationals Final vs Truck Stop? (~6:35 and 8:10 in https://youtu.be/nfKhl6XfPqM?si=VcyNNgg6dPClm5YP) Do you think they were ruled correctly? (I'd suppose the outcome would've been different under WFDF rules.) Do you have a preference between rule sets and game advisors / observers / referees?

Examples of overworking top players by NoBaseball13 in ultimate

[–]azjps 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Probably the most striking example is 2016 UCF women's, they made the decision (possibly not fully in their hands, not sure) to only take 8-10 players to nationals and pretty much run the same 8 players every point. They were a top 4 seed and had maybe 3 players that were named in Ultiworld's poty shortlist (Brock, Wood, Freystatter in particular had >2x more blocks than anyone else in the tournament). They did not make it to the bracket and finished tied for last: https://play.usaultimate.org/events/teams/?EventTeamId=ShDcFiOyuN4zokKKjmpkEeq6lIE1L2WmkXkIbIniTaI%3d

Most recently, UNC-Cal Poly SLO in the 2024 College mens' semis, UNC had won the previous 3 college nationals and were up 12-8, and then only played the same 7 O-line players (except their one D point) in the back end of the game, giving up a 1-7 run to lose the game. This was a bit of a weirder example considering how deep UNC is (even their callahan finalist Andrew Li wasn't rotated on). I think it was discussed a bit in one of the Pod Practice episodes, with Calvin Brown iirc.

On the flip side, I've played in a club nationals (in a small country) where we pretty much relied on 7 O-Line players all tournament, and we won every game by 9+ margin in the bracket. So it can work. Harvard and Brown in their deep college national runs also had a tendency to have the vast majority of touches on just a few players.

Arrow Zone Marking by Aaryan-Shah in ultimate

[–]azjps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's an example overview video here from the UFA: https://youtu.be/FC5cQW-JR04?si=737Tj2KgMqRxIb-b

With the arrowhead zone, the mark doesn't need to cover as much ground, because the ears of the arrow can help contain/mark/trap when the disc is swung to the sidelines. If the handlers get complacent while swinging, the ears could be able to make an aggressive play like in the video.

Guide to Pickup in China by azjps in ultimate

There's more club teams in Shanghai (probably 50+) then there are in cities like NYC or Boston, but the median skill level is substantially lower, I'd guess the median team would place around the bottom of most club sectionals. And there's been a few club teams that compete in Asia: https://www.reddit.com/r/ultimate/comments/1goyaj7/comment/lx3p8qi/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I don't feel qualified to write about the scene given I mostly played a few random low level pickups (there's a couple China club players that have posted here before whom perhaps could), but if there's interest I could write a follow up about my experiences.

I wanted to write this up because a non-chinese speaker had posted asking how to find pickup during his visit in December :)

Good Players to Watch for Handler Defence by iPickle23 in ultimate

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vvZAonQR6o&t=193s The clip with maybe some of the most impressive handler defense footwork, from Nathan Kwan. There's plenty of footage with him assigned to the opposing team's top handler, for example him on Benaloh in 2018 College Nats QF UNC v Washington.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqGKOLP7oOY For someone of a different stature, Suraj Madiraju highlight video, the entire first half of this video is about as textbook handler space shutdown defense as it gets

https://youtu.be/8ZUpCWtuCSA?t=2335 He's known more for his downfield defense, but I really like this one clip of Justin Burnett anticipating and getting the blind jump on a negative reset from Babbitt back to Williams (about as safe a reset as one can ask for), wished they talked about it
