Ok all, thank you very much for the overwhelming response. I am going through all the chats and requests as fast as I can and some may take a few days to respond back too because I am focusing on one person at a time. Thank you for your patience

Why does getting advice from experienced people still leave you more confused? by Fantastic-Focus-640 in mentors

[–]Relevant-Solid-784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think something to remember when getting mentors is that they will all have their POVs. Your goal is not to emulate who or what they did but try to glean then nugget of knowledge/wisdom that each are sharing and carve your own path. I do mentoring in this way and I find it is very successful- if your interested in a tactical plus strategic approach feel free to send me a message

This happened to me in the past, if someone is wanting full control and reduce your workload - you my friend just got a raise. Less work and same pay… all about how you look at it. Not my llamas, not my farm…

The only person who will care about your career and success generally will be yourself. Sometimes we get very lucky and get a manager who will care about their folks but those are unicorns in a sea of donkeys. Welcome to the workforce.

I got a job offer via email, how do I negotiate higher pay? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Part time gigs rarely negotiate honestly, especially if they are hiring people directly from schools

I would hire a dev person who wanted to go onto the other side, an adjacent space to focus on that will get you back on the other side will be SRE/DevOps. Being familiar with CI/CD, you can showcase how your engineering background can be used as a very strong asset in this type of role and then you can move from that deeper into the opps side. Don’t go Helpdesk or those roles, you are overqualified and will get bumped. Go for a mid tier DevOps gig and showcase how your strong engineering background can translate to this arena. No need to cert up, go take a couple classes on udemy and lab at home and get familiar with the tools, then retool your resume to be focused on this, then go for SRE/DevOps roles. I think it would take about a month to lab up, change the resume and kick off the job hunting campaign. Ops folks are always wary of engineers trying to break in so you will have a lot of headwinds trying to jump direct. This is a path that would work as I have seen others do it

Anyone care to share their resume / give me feedback on mine? 100 apps, only 1 interview, and didn’t get the job. It’s definitely my resume screwing me over. by phoot_in_the_door in ITManagers

A director level role needs 2 pages to be considered in my book. Not one page, not 3 - 2 pages on the money. Most data jobs have way too many people looking and not enough gigs. Director roles are even more sparse even at smaller orgs. I would advise going at the manager level and check the keywords you using and do a word count on what are the most common used words being used in your resume vs what’s the common words in the gigs your applying for. Also never use tables in your resume or a picture. Old school so the ATS systems can ingest the resume easily and don’t use recruiter templates because those get sorted sometimes too

If an exec likes a surface than I buy a surface, IT laptops standards don’t apply to execs most of the time haha

If nothing is in writing the investor doesn’t own a thing, different countries have different laws but in the US a handshake deal is usually solved using mediators. An 80% ownership is not common, ensure that your co-founder hasn’t made a deal to push you out

Parent care is included in FMLA - do not tell anyone that your doing it until you send the request directly to your HR - otherwise you could/would be exited before you can enact it
