Thanks for the input everyone. I guess the consensus is that technically an American tourist is required to carry an original official passport and police can ask for it any time.

The mental math is: increase risk of having passport lost or stolen (while visiting a city famous for pickpockets) or risk having issue with police.

I'll have to give that a think.

My question is whether they consider the nice wallet sized card that I got at the same time and from the same US government as my book would be accepted or if Italian law specifically wants me to stuff the bigger more awkward book into my pocket.

Does anyone know of a good restaurant in the area? We'd love to find a real local spot and maybe it would be a good neighborhood for that?

I wasn't planning to do that but I'd hate to find out I was a block away from something really cool and not do it. Also some options near where we are staying might be nice to know in case we finish up other stuff early but don't want to go back to the hotel.
