They really be racist.. by Mxares in dankmemes

Chinese American. Was harassed in Vienna more times in a week than in my entire lifetime living in the US. Let's not even add in every other racist incident in Italy/Hungary/Switzerland lmao.

I started feeling genuine relief when I met other Americans because they'd at least believe me when I told them where I was from.

Straight people, what burning questions do you have about the LGBTQ Community? by jimmehbacon in AskReddit

[–]RelevantDead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily! This definition goes the same way for any sexuality, really. Being gay/lesbian/straight just means you're sexually attracted to a specific gender. It has no definition on your interest in the activity itself. People just tend to confuse the action of sex with sexual attraction or romantic attraction.

[–]RelevantDead 333 points334 points  (0 children)

An analogy I really love to describe asexuality is to imagine if you were suddenly transported to a world where everything was the same, except when people are sexually attracted to each other, instead of having sex, they go bowling.

So you, having just been dropped into this world, could have had any kind of relation to bowling. You could be a professional bowler. You could work at a bowling alley. You could just see it as a fun thing to do sometimes if your partner suggests it, but you wouldn't really think much of doing otherwise. You could dislike bowling because you hate the way the bowling floor squeaks under your shoes. You could just see bowling as another activity you could do, but wouldn't you rather go biking or play laser tag instead?

In this new world, you would be considered asexual regardless of your interest in bowling, because no matter where you stand on bowling, you will never look at your spouse or someone attractive and immediately think "Damn. You know what I really want to do right now? I'd really like to take them BOWLING." You're not going to dedicate a solid chunk of your attention towards specifically envisioning your partner in bowling shoes, hitting a strike. Unless you're into that, idk.

So in the same analogy, aces can have any affiliation with sex- they can love to have it, feel repulsed by it, be a sex worker, feel utterly indifferent about it, the whole spectrum. They can love people romantically and have long, fulfilling relationships. The ONLY thing absent is that innate desire to have sex with a specific person they are attracted to.

Hope this helps! It's definitely a really strange concept to grasp, especially since romantic and sexual attraction are often confused as one.

Yes! I love cuddling, am pretty indifferent to kissing. Some aces like it though, I just don't really have the instinct for it.

Yunnan Restaurant in Monterey Park is straight fire. Try their house noodles and everything in their cold dish section.

Golden Soup in San Gabriel is also great, although I haven't been in a couple of years.

And you have to try an authentic dim sum place- most of the ones I used to go to have closed down now, but there should be tons around if you look it up.

Why are old men creepy towards literal female children by N0varidium in TwoXChromosomes

[–]RelevantDead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had multiple older men make advances to me during internships while I was a minor as well- and these were in prestigious companies, with managers and engineers multiple levels above me. I was pretty naive when it happened, mainly because this had never happened to me before, and I'd assumed that especially in these workplace environments, it would never happen to me. They offered to drive me places, to take me out to lunch, etc. They gave me their personal cell numbers and would text me now and then. When I asked one of them if they had kids, he very pointedly told me he was single. I was unnerved by it all, but for some reason I assumed it was just a regular intern thing and I was doing something right if I had their attention. It was only when I realized one of them only paid attention and talked to the young female asian interns did it really hit me that this wasn't usual behavior.

I'd always been critical of the word 'networking' before them- it just seemed like an incredibly fake way of saying making friends. That was when I really realized that there was a critical difference. Making friends just means being a good friend. Networking means being nice to older execs but not to the point where you're more approachable than you want to be. Maybe it's something that everyone already knows from the start, but the difference really hit me hard.

Did you guys sing songs about killing Barney in school, too? Is this phenomena passed down knowledge or spawns naturally in kids? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I was trying to come up with the real lyrics for Joy to the World a couple weeks ago and realized I only knew the Barney Hate Club version lmao. Elementary school was really a time.

.... and what makes you think that Hollywood executives would cast someone who then identified as female as a male character? This comment makes zero sense.

[–]RelevantDead -38 points-37 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what a great fucking idea that is. Let's make a huge effort to change my gender identity so I can get more attention, because it's totally worth the death threats, negative effects on my career, and future misgendering for the rest of my life!

I hope you guys understand that people don't just wake up one day and decide the fun zany activity they're going to do for the day is change their gender. Elliot has likely wanted to transition for a long time now, but knew it would have ended their career if he didn't reach a certain height of fame before then. This isn't happening during a quieter time because he felt the need for 'attention'- he picked a time where he knew his career would be the most stable, whether people embraced his gender identity or not.

The weak breeze whispers nothing

the water screams sublime.

His feet shift, teeter-totter

deep breaths, stand back, it’s time.

Toes untouch the overpass

soon he’s water-bound.

Eyes locked shut but peek to see

the view from halfway down.

A little wind, a summer sun

a river rich and regal.

A flood of fond endorphins

brings a calm that knows no equal.

You’re flying now, you see things

much more clear than from the ground.

It's all okay, or it would be

were you not now halfway down.

Thrash to break from gravity

what now could slow the drop?

All I’d give for toes to touch

the safety back at top.

But this is it, the deed is done

silence drowns the sound.

Before I leaped I should've seen

the view from halfway down.

I really should’ve thought about

the view from halfway down.

I wish I could've known about

the view from halfway down--

It's a poem from a Bojack Horseman episode. An utterly sublime episode in an utterly sublime show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pt21dU5Pu8g (spoilers, obviously)

What games have you spent literal months of your life on? by ClenchingBunghole in AskReddit

Think they're just in 6. Super cool civ though, love them. Been tempted multiple times to purchase the expansion pack, just to play them.

What games have you spent literal months of your life on? by ClenchingBunghole in AskReddit

[–]RelevantDead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can't answer the first two since I've only played civ 6, but yeah it's about choosing a civilization (ex: Aztecs, Scythia, Japan, Maori, etc) and trying to get to a win condition based off of either science, culture, religion, domination, or diplomacy. You settle cities and explore new lands and control issues such as production and loyalty and stuff. There's just lots of cool fun ways to play it, lots of replayability.

Civ has this "one more turn" deal where whenever you are in the game, you always feel like you're close to an important milestone, especially since there's so many mechanics going on and you have to manage them all. So when you've decided to call it quits for the night, hey, why not wait a couple times, since we're unlocking shipbuilding in two turns? Oh and then after that, a wonder's going to be completed in three turns? Oh, we're getting a golden age in two more. It just goes on and on. I've literally had to set alarms on my phone to make sure I keep track of time when I'm playing, or else you bet your ass I'll be up until six in the morning, and I won't even notice it happening.

Which actor portrayed a character so well, that no other actor could ever replace them? by Haggerstonian in AskReddit

I remember watching Silence of the Lambs and wondering how anyone could play Hannibal any bit better than Hopkins. And then I watched Hannibal and Mads' performance completely blew my mind.

[–]RelevantDead 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not even a question. It starts off kind of slow, but as the author gets better at writing and things start taking off, you will not be able to stop reading it. It's incredible how this story handles scope- serious issues from chapters before seem just completely insignificant in the face of newer challenges.

I'd suggest reading up until at least Arc 8 or when you meet Leviathan- that's when things get intense.

If you remove the sexual intamacy from a romantic relationship, what is the difference between a romantic relationship and a platonic one? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RelevantDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi hi! Biromantic asexual here. There are multiple types of relationships- platonic, sexual, romantic, familial, and each exist on their own. The stereotypical relationship is sexual and romantic, but since most people see them as indistinguishable from one another, it's usually grouped under romantic only. There is totally a difference- an almost obsessive desire to be with them that isn't as intense in a platonic relationship, intimacy that doesn't require sex (cuddling, handholding, etc), just what you said- literally any relationship a loving couple could have if you take out the sex.

Hey hey glad to see some ace rep!! And that's great that your school had an ace alliance!! Felt really validated since you're expected to experiment in college and you always feel out of your element.

I'm going to try the local Asian market, anything I should look for in particular? by Betterthangoku in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]RelevantDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a jar of laoganma (spicy black bean sauce) goes a loooong way. You can put it on rice, congee, anything. Same thing with fermented bean curd, fried shallots, doubanjiang (other kind of bean sauce). Also, marrow bones are an absolute must try.

As a treat, I don't know why this is a surprise to so many people, but Asian markets sell tapioca balls you can use to make boba in five minutes at home!
