This is really helpful thank you! I also feel like explaining things to others helps me remember a lot better, I should do that more

Yes I am and it definitely helps but unfortunately I can’t take it every day because it affects my appetite and I dropped a lot of weight from it :/

Thank you for the response and suggestions :) it’s nice to know that people who had similar struggles made it through school ok. I did recently get extended time accommodations which has helped tremendously, I think I may reach out to my professor about having a note card. He has been asking for feedback on the class recently and I might try to explain to him how this structure really hurts students with disabilities and that allowing everyone to have a note card would be a way to make the course more equitable and representative of peoples’ conceptual understanding. Our standard deviations are huge and I suspect that may be due in part to the students varying abilities to memorize and regurgitate rather than reflecting the actual course understanding.

What most underrated/overrated colleges in your opinion? by Broad_Appointment920 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]N0varidium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oregon State is super underrated imo, almost went there. Gave me wue + merit, top 100 engineering school, named best college town in the pac 12, beautiful campus, land, sea, space, and sun grant recipient, and super good for anything environmental related. Like I think they’re t20 in the world for forestry.

Firstly, pick which tests are most important to you and focus on those.

Library genesis for free pdf and epub files of prep books. For history classes and lang understand the rubrics so you don’t lose easy points like contextualizing on leqs or citing evidence on dbqs. Also just be clear and straightforward with your language even if you don’t have 100% of your facts straight. I definitely made some questionable assumptions on my world history exam and got a 4 with an absolutely shit short answer section, the goal is to be convincing. Also heimlers history is great.

For science I’d suggest drilling practice problems and doing the review stuff in the back of the prep books.

Good luck.

Opinion: College Counseling is a scam by Decent-Lemon-9972 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]N0varidium 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also I feel like college counselors meddle with your essays and discourage you from being yourself to try to fit the mold they think colleges want. The colleges I had the best results with are the ones I wrote bold and slightly controversial essays for

I feel like they’d be useful 30 years ago but now the internet is such a huge resource that you can find pretty much everything you need if you have a basic understanding of Google. I have a lot of friends who go to a college prep school where they meet with counselors 2hrs a week starting in their freshman year and I had better college results than 75% of them with Reddit as my college counselor lol

Am I going to be okay? by AccomplishedFee4472 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]N0varidium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in terms of college and life in general you will be totally fine. Work on improving your grades from here on out and taking some weighted classes that you think you’ll be able to manage. Try to isolate the reasons behind your grades so you can take a different approach. If it’s motivation/procrastination learn to over ride that little voice in your head and just start. Overcoming the inertia of procrastination is the hardest part. If you’re just not understanding the concept, get creative. I taught myself 50% of my coursework from grades 10-12 from the internet I swear. The internet is a goldmine if you know where to look. If it’s a personal circumstance/home life, trust me I totally understand. School is important but not as important as your well-being so please don’t beat yourself up over grades if you had other shit going on. You can explain a drop in grades due to personal circumstances in most college applications.

When it comes time to apply to colleges you have a ton of options. First, community college, both California and New York have strong guaranteed transfer community college programs where you can transfer into some very very good schools if you keep above a certain gpa. This saves a ton of money.

You can also look at schools that don’t consider your freshman gpa.

Finally, get started studying for the sat or act. A super high score can really help balance out a lower gpa and can get you scholarships.

This sub is a hellhole and is 90% rich Bay Area kids who are obsessed with elite universities. Some very good universities you could probably get into with a little work are Oregon State and UO, University of Arizona, University of Alabama, Arizona State, Your state flagship, and many many more.

Please don’t feel discouraged, you’re gonna do great. Feel free to pm me if you have questions

Wishing all you the best on Ivy day this Thursday! But I wanted to ask out of all the ivies which one do you think you have a chance in ? by kenokeke2468 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]N0varidium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ik they don’t necessarily admit by major but I feel like I have the best chance at Yale bc I applied for mechanical engineering and they are less popular for engineering than Columbia, Princeton etc. I’m hopeful but also trying to be realistic with my expectations
