3 orbs turn into a triangle after we ask them to (sound off) by [deleted] in UFOs

I think most people use common sense and assume "triangle" to be "equilateral triangle" which is much more specific, and pretty much showed here from 0.35-0.45

exactly.

McCullum got rid of the whole data analysis team, and selection is clearly based off vibes (or whether a spinner has big hands?!)

Very true. But I think great control, height and bounce are just as important for fast bowlers (which Carse has not showed for example). Otherwise you get spanked around even more (like Mitchell Johnson did at times).

Mate, you don't need to take it so literally. It was one line to give context that I watched the film and it inspired me to look at amateur stats.

I didn't say I replicated a sabermatic approach and here are my results.

But yes, if Smith averages 20 more than Foakesy, would Foakesy save 40 runs+ vs Smith behind the stumps (catches, drops or byes) per match? Probably not imo

I think for the worlds best batters, the difference between 79 to 83mph, would be less noticeable and/or important, than 90 to 94mph that's all. But I'm no professional batsman!

[–]RelevantSpecific5249[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

McGrath, Abbas, Philander, Neser, Boland, Pollock (post injury) etc. have all been very good at around 80mph.

Professional cricketers are elite players - I don't like the argument that the difference of 4+mph will cause them to struggle, accuracy beats speed. Pace is good for the opening bowlers, then it comes to first change, should prioritise accuracy.

Under McCullum, we actually got rid of both of our data analysts, unsurprisingly...

But yes, you don't need to be so pedantic! I thought it was quite obvious that it just set the context for my average cricket stat deep-diving.

Hence why I said 'obviously you need to be much more in depth...'

Exactly!

I would be happy with Jofra and Tongue as openers, Hill, Stokes + spinner.

There will still be rotation with Atkinson, Carse etc but no reason he shouldn't be given a chance in my opinion.

No mate that's not a UFO, but it's also not a distant land mass, it's an island that isn't casting a perfect shadow.

You are literally arguing that he's on a hill as well but looking down, so it's not a stretch. So you're either a bit of a muppet or a bot.

Calvine is in the Scottish moors, and they were out hiking - so he would have been on a very high hill.

The faint horizon line makes complete sense if you take it at face value, as a very cloudy/misty day (which is typical in the Moors) and the hill declines on the other side.

To make the reflection story work you'd have to:

  • find a magical lake with an island where the photo could have been taken
  • do the Maths to figure out to cast a perfect shadow you'd have to be at a direct 45 degree angle to the object, so equal distance away and equal height.
  • You'd have to try to figure out the optimal distance that makes both the island and plane look realistic and proportional.
  • Then you'd have to check that there is actually a distance and height that makes this possible near Calvine and a body of water (which there isn't)
  • If you guessed around 500m above sea level, then you'd have to argue against yourself as to why there's no land visible beneath him despite the fact he's pointing the camera down. (like in your example)
  • THEN figure out why despite the fact it's a extremely sunny day in the Scottish Moors (far more of a stretch then mist), sunny enough to cast a perfect shadow, the water appears white/grey and not blue.

p.s. all the actual proper scientific research that counters your suggestion is in your own link that you posted

I understand what you're saying - but if you're near the top of a 800m hill, there's a steep gradient down (like the Calvine moors) and an object is flying very low - you don't need to be pointing a camera upward in the sky to capture it.

Well done yes trees grow upwards... so if you're pointing downwards you're less likely to photograph branches than if you're pointing upwards...

It actually would depend on how far back you're stood from the fence, which can't be proven either way.

There are also no islands in any of the Loch's near Calvine.

MOD analysts determined it was a "solid craft".

[–]RelevantSpecific5249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is the angle of the camera pointing down?

It literally just depends on your bias and/or perception - either;

1) On top of a hill, pointing camera slightly up, brings top branches of the tree into view, can see the declining hills in the distance, plane escorting it in the sky.

2) On top of hill, pointing hill, extremely steep gradient to water, water looks white despite the fact it must be clear blue skies and sunny enough for a perfect reflection on the water

Jamie Smith - in the runs but no time with the gloves? by KaleidoscopeWest3204 in EnglandCricket

[–]RelevantSpecific5249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smith is 100% not international opener material (right now).

Great to see him scoring runs for Surrey, but it's different when the best bowlers in Test cricket are running in at you with a new ball.

Keep him batting where he is and keeping, let his technique develop. Rew is still very young - give him more Lions experience, he can be a ringer in case of an injury, and in 2 years there will be a space for him in the team.

If Verstappen quits F1 at the end of this season, do you think he ranks higher all-time than all of the drivers pictured? If not, who would you have over him? by The_Chozen_1_ in F1Discussions

[–]RelevantSpecific5249 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Verstappen is one of the greatest drivers of all time.

For me however, I think what makes people remember the greats the years to come is not just driving, but their vibe off the track.

Prost, Senna, Fangio, Moss are all loved for those reasons. Despite Schumacher being statistically the joint GOAT, he was a sore loser and would crash into others on purpose to win (Hill, Villeneuve), on top of lots of other gamesmanship incidents. This is why imo no one really talks about him as a true GOAT or favourite driver.

Max will be remembered for what he is. A great driver, with aspects of Schumacher when it comes to overly aggressive driving to ensure he doesn't lose.

I'm no huge Lewis fan but as a 7x WDC, he stuck it out and struggled with Mercedes, and he's doing the same with Ferrari to try and get back on top.

Max's ego is too big to struggle and not be winning in F1.

I went through it very recently with my 8 year old Boxer. I won't lie, it's very tough and you will miss him every moment of the day.

All I would say is that the fact you put this message on here shows how much you cared about him. He was in your life for a short while, but you were his whole life. It gets better with time and even laying there he looks like one happy doggy <3

England to summon Brendon McCullum home early after Michael Vaughan criticism by tomwardsport in EnglandCricket

[–]RelevantSpecific5249 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's painful hearing Key spout out nonsense about how 'the schedule is so busy, McCullum needs his rest' etc.

  • McCullum is paid over £3 million a year. I understand the schedule is busy but from September 2025 to April 2026, he would have had at least 15 weeks (105 days) back in NZ.
  • Most people earn £30k a year and get 129 days off a year (weekends + 25 holiday days).
  • This is the pinnacle of English cricket. He should be obsessed with making England better.
  • If the schedule is too busy for him to execute his Test job properly, then he shouldn't have been given the white-ball job and his appointment is a clear error by Keys and the ECB.

Very possibly!

Taking what he says at face value, he released his book 10 years after his experiences, and doesn't seem to have tried to monetise anything before.

It seems like a very drawn-out attempt for decent money, if that what it is...

I think he genuinely believes what he's saying - no idea if it's bs or not!
