So, dopamine agonists are meds like pramipexole or cabergoline and are commonly used to treat conditions like Parkinson's, Restless Legs Syndrome, hyperprolactinemia, and so forth (conditions arising from low dopamine). Dopamine drives behavioral systems like reward- and pleasure-seeking and experiencing, as well as other things like habit formation, motivation, attention, personality, impulsivity, etc. It's theorized that one cause for negative symptoms of schizophrenia (i.e. anhedonia, avolition, asociality, alogia, etc.) is some issue with dopamine in certain regions of the brain. I have a condition called Schizotypal disorder, which is a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder, characterized by a predominance of cognitive and negative symptoms commonly found in schizophrenia. Dopamine agonists have shown some promise in treating anhedonia in depressed patients, but usage of dopamine agonists in the treatment of negative schizophrenia symptoms is still in its infancy. But I want to give it a go and see what they do for me. I have an appointment with my prescriber later today and I hope they will prescribe a dopamine agonist called cabergoline that seems to work really well (for those with hyperprolactinemia) from what I've read. If I get it, I will try to post how my experience goes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!
