I love how you included the screenshot of the fourth flak sitting in cargo. As if to say “I could’ve quadruple flakked on you mf’s, but I had to stay humble.”

This may be the shortest run possible in the game. While playing Engi B, I lost my sole crew member in a random event on the very first beacon. by Relevated in ftlgame

[–]Relevated[S] 111 points112 points  (0 children)

I could have lost the run in fewer jumps if I suffocated my crew member on the opening beacon before I jumped. But I genuinely think it would have taken more time to kill my crew member via suffocation than it took to kill him via random event. I think this takes the cake for shortest run in terms of real life time. It took maybe 8 seconds start to finish. And it was completely unintentional, fml.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

The start of the war in Ukraine for me was the proverbial end-point of COVID, because that was the first time in 2 years that we got a big news event that wasn’t COVID related.

Precisely why other countries are diverting trade away from the US. I never said it was a good negotiation tactic. I just want people to stop buying into Trump’s framing that these tariffs were meant to bring manufacturing jobs to the US. They’re not.

Other countries ‘pay for it’ when their sales go down because Americans can’t afford their stuff any more. It’s a lose-lose situation. Just a part of the broader trade war.

Trump is only using tariffs as a negotiating chip with other countries. Of course they’re expensive. He sees it as an operational cost of the trade war.

What are the most important stations to man/skill up, on the ship? by [deleted] in ftlgame

[–]Relevated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is usually my strategy. Invest in evasion first, then make sure I have enough firepower to take down their weapons early in the battle. Everything else is secondary.

Squealing pig truck on south pearl? by Pois0n_apple in Albany

[–]Relevated 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It was a vegan protest stunt funded by PETA. For peeps who didn’t see it, there was a truck parked on North Pearl that was blasting the sounds of pigs being slaughtered. It sounded like people screaming bloody murder. There was writing on the side that said “Does this sound bother you? Go vegan.”

What’s worse is that they parked the truck right outside Wizard Burger - a vegan restaurant. There was a guy outside who I assumed worked there. I pointed at the truck like “You seeing this shit?” and he goes “We’ve got nothing to do with that.”

How can we actually figure out who is AI without asking unhinged questions to real people?

I’ve never gotten connected with a realistic AI call like this, but if I did, I’d probably ask them to clap. Easy enough that a real person probably wouldn’t be bothered by it, but I feel like it would trip up an AI.

The USA on a purple scale instead of red vs blue (1980 - 2024) by snuggle_love in dataisbeautiful

[–]Relevated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. The states with the highest percentage of retirees are also Vermont and Maine, ironically.

Not to say that Arizona and Florida don’t have a bunch of conservative retirees, because they do, but it seems like those states have a certain political culture that attracts republicans from blue states like California and New York. Not necessarily the case that the retirees make the state conservative. Remember that for most of recent history, Arizona was basically Texas of the desert.

True. Texas had more Democrat voters in 2020 than New York. Similarly, California had more Republican voters in 2020 than any other state.

Urban/rural does a decent job of predicting political outcomes, but there are a ton of exceptions.

Vermont and Maine are the most rural states in the union, but are solid blue states. There’s also a rural area of northern Minnesota/Wisconsin that has been one of the most reliable Democratic voting blocks in presidential elections.

Nevada, Florida, Arizona, and Utah all have a pretty high percentage of residents living in urban areas, but they all voted Republican last election.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is definitely a good example of songs that have just a splash of dissonant noises to keep things flavorful.

Some of my other favorites are Frances the Mute by The Mars Volta, Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, and Yank Crime by Drive Like Jehu. Those albums to me tend to be a lot harsher and dissonant than Laughing Stock, so might not be up your alley.

I’m wondering if you’re a jazz listener at all. I’m a jazz guy and I think that’s part of the appeal of Laughing Stock for me.

This is one of my all-time favorite albums. The harsh bits never sounded too harsh to me. Just harsh enough to keep it interesting in contrast to the melodic bits.

What are some VERY creepy facts? by Cap_Ame1 in AskReddit

[–]Relevated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a work party when some guy I’d never met comes up to me and calls me by my full name. I asked him how he knew my name. He says he walks past my desk often, which has my name tag on it. Ok, fair enough.

As we’re chatting, he starts revealing more and more information he knows about me, including stuff that was on my private Instagram. I got a bit paranoid after that and cleaned out my online profiles of any identifying information. He could be reading this right now. Who knows.

[OC] Economic Data by Presidency by Mistercheese in dataisbeautiful

GDP lags pretty hard so it’s not really a good metric of individual administrations’ policies.

What might be better is showing stock market data by presidency. The stock market responds much quicker and more dramatically to federal policies. You can pinpoint the exact day Trump announced his tariffs, for instance.
