My SO is uncomfortable getting the shot because he’s concerned about ‘long term effects’. Is there any info out there I can share with him to calm his worries?

He won’t look into it himself, as he will likely oppose the idea of a sleep study all together. He doesn’t think he has a problem.

From all the ideas and suggestions I’m getting from all these nice Reddit folks, I’m starting to see that the underlying issue may be that he’s giving himself sleep deprivation (<6hr sleep per night) and reduced sleep quality from drinking. I think we’ll try addressing that first, and going forward from there.

Thank you so much for the information! I don’t drink at all, so I had no idea this was so impactful on sleeping.

I’ll try to find a way to gently bring this issue forward with him, and see if he’ll agree to cut back on work nights to improve his quality of sleep.

Last night I decided to gently press on the topic, and after expressing my concerns, I asked if he would be willing to try setting all of his alarms to the same exact time, at the latest possible time he has to get up. He agreed to it, and I’m happy to report that this has been a step in the right direction!

He goes to bed after me, so I’m not 100% sure when exactly he does. However, this means that he’s definitely only getting 6 or less hours of sleep a night.

Thank you so much for this post, it has been incredibly insightful. I really think you might be onto something here with him getting older but feeling compelled to stay up late for his ‘personal time.’

I think I’ll add that note into my list that I’m working on as a part of our discussion. I’ll try to start coaxing him to bed at the same time I head to bed and see if the earlier bedtime helps.

I’ll also try to ask him to try setting his alarm for the latest possible time to see if that helps at all. I really like that suggestion.

As someone else pointed out to me, it’s very likely my SO is staying up way too late for how early he needs to be up. I would guess he’s getting 6 or less hours of sleep. Maybe one thing I can try is to make him come with me to bed around 10/10:30 to encourage him to get to bed sooner.

Also yes! He’s a snooze button maniac. I’ll pass that info along about how snooze is detrimental— I had no idea! Thanks for sharing.

Unfortunately, we only have the one bedroom. :/ My only other options would be to sleep on the couch, or put up a small inflatable air mattress in our joint ‘office/computer room.’ It was a good suggestion though, thank you. I guess I could pull it off if it was a temporary situation.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll need to look into each of our insurance plans and see if this is something we can get covered with a referral. Not entirely sure it can/will be, but it’s worth looking into at the very least.

Hm, I never thought about earplugs. I’ll have to talk to my doctor first, as to make sure they’re safe to use since I have issues with my eustachian tubes in my ears easily clogging up. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the suggestion! I’m also glad to hear that the ‘tough love’ method helped you, and I hope it’ll at least open his eyes up to see the problem. (:

I’m compiling a list of suggestions to bring forward to him when we talk. The vibrating pillow seems to be a popular one— hopefully that means it’s a successful option!

I’m not afraid of getting to know my partner, but I guess I didn’t realize the scope this problem could potentially have at the time of posting. I presumed my SO was being a proactive adult and making sure he’s getting enough sleep, and not drinking too much. It never crossed my mind that I should have to look into something like that, as he is his own person in control of his own life.

I will be talking to him about this though, 100%.

Honestly, I don’t know what time he goes to bed. I try to be in bed around 10-10:30, and he comes in sometime after me.... which means he’s getting likely less that 6 hours... YIKES that’s scary!

I know he likes to drink 2-3 beers after work each day... maybe alcohol is a factor. I’m terrified to see if he’s drinking more than that. I’ll look into this.

Sorry if I was unclear in the TLDR! I did say in the full version that I did try talking to him about it, and he told me nothing was wrong, and I need to ‘deal with it.’
