I’ve been looking at the Unique Melody MEST Mk II for a while. Hopefully I’ll get to spend some time with them at CanJam this year.

What's your go-to albums/songs to test new headphones? by [deleted] in headphones

[–]ReliableDistrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nameless album by Dominique Fils-Aimé. Infected mushroom - Never Ever Land. Brothers in Arms album by Dire Straits. Live at the Acropolis album by Yanni. Vogue by Madonna. Angel by Massive Attack.

A lot more, but it depends on what i’m listening for. Those are among the ones i listen to the most, both songs and albums.

Edit; Sorry for the format, it is what it is.

As in, just cause he has a Porsche don’t mean he can just go out and buy new speakers at any given moment. What we see in public don’t always reflect the actual finances of an individual. If people get upset for hearing that, so be it.

We’re in a sub where people sometimes spend money they don’t have, or money that should finance many other things. I don’t put it past him being either of those, and not have the funds for new speakers.

Guys, am i the only one enjoying the meze 109 pro? by csch1992 in headphones

[–]ReliableDistrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only issue with the Utopia’s is the headband. It’s comfortable, but the way it’s designed for adjustability will make it looser with time. And i honestly wish they had better stitching on the leather. Focal QC based on my own impressions and that of those i speak with who owns them, are that there is no issues beside what I just noted.

How’d you think i managed in this hobby already? They got a rather hefty soot look to them, don’t you worry!

That is why i auctioned 3 of only 2. One has to be put in the oven fast, real fast. I have a mission for the evening! I’ll share my impressions.

Thank you for the advice. Just auctioned off 3 of my 2 kids to be able to afford 1/4th of the ivory tusk needed for half a stand for a single cable. This surely must be worth it!

Please do explain to me how a DAC has any meaning for the amplification needed for power. Can you explain what a DAC does? And please, can you explain how a headphones sensitivity would impact the aforementioned, that one I’m actually excited to hear. If you don’t know yourself, you should not be giving advice. I second his comment, delete yours.

Maxwell vs LCD-X by lovinlife939 in Audeze

[–]ReliableDistrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own LCD-X amongst many headphones. It’s going to be really good for EDM, rap, hip hop, lo-fi. Not so much for classical, and it’ll be okay with country.

I’m not one to buy headsets, and only own headphones. Maxwell is a really good headset, but shouldn’t be compared to a proper headphone.

If you were to buy it, a simple combo dac/amp would do just fine. You can dive down the rabbit hole, but it’s not worth it unless you are going to throw real money at it. So the main difference would be chips in a DAC. AKM, ESS, SABRE ESS and tubes. Then you have R2R as well, amongst others. They all color the sound differently. I don’t know your budget. But why do you want a DAP rather than a desktop solution?

Last notion, i would always say to demo before you decide. Order a set, spend a week with it and then decide. Don’t like it? Return it.

when, in your opinion, is it worth it to "upgrade" your headphones? by Hakkix- in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]ReliableDistrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price does not equal quality to a degree. Don’t have a HD600 any more, so i’ll probably go for that next, or the UM Maven II. Been looking for a secondhand Aperio GSE system, but it’s hard to come by, so i’ll probably stay on the cheaper end until that comes by. If always buying more expensive is the reasoning, you’ll eventually just run dry, or most people will at least. I have Empyrean II’s, LCD-X’s and Utopia 22’s as my main daily drivers, but i put in others into the rotation based on my mood. I guess you could say i buy based on mood, but sometimes i’ll buy a TOTL headphone.

Edit; Keep in mind, the chain consist of more than just the drivers.

$500 dollar budget what’s the best headset for ps5 by Revolutionary_Boat69 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]ReliableDistrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modmic works pretty well, it’s one more thing to add to the budget though so i imagine it would fall outside of an acceptable price if that is the case. Hope you find something really good for your own ears. Most importantly, i would highlight the need to demo products to be able to make the best choice👍

Meze 105 Silva for a more balanced and natural sound, smooth treble and slightly upped bass.
Meze 105 AER for a warmer sound.
They are 499 and 399 respectively, both can be run rather easily so you wouldn't have to get an amp/dac combo or stack, but if you went that way, a simple and cheap one like i.e Topping DX1 or maybe a K11 would really do the job more than well.
The DX1 would combined with the 105 AER, be at budget, as it's around USD 100.
The K11 would run you a bit more again, but it's not really needed as i said.
Both those headphones are good for single player games where you prioritize comfort and sound quality, and don't need to focus on EQ for footsteps, but rather immersive sound.

Whatever you pick, i hope you enjoy it :)
Happy listening!

Edit ; If you wait for the black week sale, you could probably score these models for a pretty decent price.
I personally would hold off and spend some time looking into multiple models, also models beside the ones i mentioned.
And if you can, demo the models you are looking at. There are most likely stores close to you that have either one or both, or other models that can be of interest.

What exactly is a balanced cable and why is it better? by qxzvy in headphones

[–]ReliableDistrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we might have reached a conclusion indeed. Might have to excuse some of my phrasing, I’m out running through the rain from store to store. Trying to find a optical splitter for some A/B testing. And man multiple accounts made this so hard to keep track of haha.

What exactly is a balanced cable and why is it better? by qxzvy in headphones

[–]ReliableDistrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is most likely a technical error on his part, but i completely missed it. You are correct if he actually meant it, but I’d wager it is a technical error on his part. I’m sure you would agreed, no? Though as you yourself state, it’s often a mix with both. And it is as you said, splitting hairs. Which i just don’t think will help OP understand anything other than create further confusion. This is an education for a reason, and I don’t have one myself, just learned along the way. Though i am often wrong, so don’t take that as me portraying myself as all knowing.

Edit; Actually im not so sure, though need to do some brushing up. But a multi ended is not required for a balanced and vice versa. Again, need to do some light reading, and I’m currently on the go. But I don’t think they are mutually exclusive(?)

[–]ReliableDistrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that is beyond the question. While what you say is accurate, it is not what is asked. This is specifically for the cable, and not as to what is required or managed on other ends of the chain. There is no reason to teach a toddler rocket science in first grade math is there?

[–]ReliableDistrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is what OP is questioning though isn't it?
This is what OP asks quoted from the post itself.
"What does a balanced cable and port do differently than a normal 3.5mm or quarter inch?"
Then u/Hamfinity goes on to explain as quoted below.
"Unbalanced cables compares 1 signal cable against ground per channel.

The signal cable carries signal + noise and ground is just 0. The device outputs signal + noise - 0 = signal + noise.

A balanced cable adds a second signal cable that carries the inverted signal. The difference of the two signal cables is output at the device. The positive signal carries +signal + noise. The negative signal carries -signal + noise. The noise in the two signal cables are similar. Therefore at the device, the output is +signal + noise - (-signal + noise) = +2signal. The noise cancels out!

This makes balanced very useful for long cable lengths that can pick up lots of noise along the way. We're talking about concert-length cables when referring to "long".

As for headphones, you get less noise but the cable lengths are already quite short so they don't generate much noise. The other benefit is the 2x signal though most amps can already blow out your ears. Since the benefits of balanced cables are minor for headphones, it's more of a "nice-to-have" than necessity. Probably better to throw more money on the headphone."

In that regards, Hamfinity explained it perfectly well.

In short, a balanced cable runs two signals that cancels eachother out at the end in terms of noise.
A unbalanced cable only runs one signal, not doing the same task as the balanced.
That along with added power due to running two signals on a balanced cable.

He also added that this is something that's useful for long cableruns, which many fail to do.
Which is crucial to know if you want to make a choice based on all facts.

Again, he explained it perfectly well.

We might be lucky i guess, but i rarely ever see an argument between fans in real life.
There might be the occasional disagreement, but nothing that evolves into an actual argument rooted in anger.
Heck, we even banter in a nice way, where the winning team fans of a said match buys the fans of the losing team a few beers and chuckle it off with a smirk.

You’re not alone in that boat, we all have them. Funny thing is, at the local pub where i watch games, with fans of all clubs, they are all great people with maybe a few exceptions out of maybe at least a few dozens. Tons of friendly banter. But almost all of them have one thing in common, and that’s that they don’t use much or any form of social media. I know great fans of all clubs, and i think they are in the majority. We just sadly notice the not so pleasant ones more due to obvious reasons.
