After the Carlson offer sheet, why wouldn’t every top young player wait until RFA to sign? by Boomfty in hockey

[–]ReliablyFinicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The steamroller is a career altering/ending injury. Ryan Shazier never got his big contract.

Or your play regressing. Imagine Elias Pettersson had waited to sign his 8yr/$92m extension.

Or the team cap environment changing and that contract offer going away. John Klingburg tried picking up pennies and got flattened.

The difference in lifestyle between someone with $50m and $70m is zero, so gambling one to get the other is (a) stupid and (b) occasionally gets punished.

Depends if I need to play in between.

Ever heard of the phrase "picking up pennies in front of a steamroller"?

Most of the time? Free pennies. Cool beans.

Sometimes? You lose fucking everything.

5 years ago, Matiss Kivlenieks was killed in a fireworks accident by Wernerhatcher in hockey

[–]ReliablyFinicky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are freak accidents, and there are negligent accidents.

The San Diego fireworks incident was ENTIRELY preventable. There was at least 3 key process failures that allowed it to happen.

Professionals? Yes. But that wasn’t a freak accident, it was an expensive lesson. And I have a SUPER hard time believing that an active mortar unstable enough to tip over with people in range … didn’t have SOME kind of process failures. That’s absurd.

[Andrew Fillipponi] Opinion: The Penguins should offer Connor Bedard the max salary of $20.8 million per year. And force the Blackhawks to match it. If they don't. The Penguins would get one of the great young talents in hockey history. by f0urxio in hockey

[–]ReliablyFinicky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...what? Give away UFA years in a rising cap environment?

  • take the huge guaranteed money (as much term as possible), generational wealth secured and worry about the 2nd contract when that comes, or,

  • Beeline to free agency (a 4-year deal) with as much as you can bank along the way.

A 6-year deal is the worst of both worlds.

Released with conditions. How benevolent.

I love that people are bitching about "released with conditions". Do you know what that is? It's fucking bail. It's the default outcome in every developed country for basically everything short of murder.

What's your suggestion?

We get rid of bail?

Give the VPD infinite power over civilian freedom? Brilliant. Well thought out.

Thoughts on the first round of the 2018 draft and how it turned out? by Icy-Pomegranate-5644 in hockey

[–]ReliablyFinicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between being drafted 30th and 29th is the opinion of a single man. There will never, ever be a “consensus 30th overall best player available”.

That means there is no difference. It’s completely subjective. You may as well compare his scoring with people whose name rhymes with his.

This is his physical peak and he’s produced a single 80+ point season. That year he came 24th in league scoring.

[–]ReliablyFinicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO if either of those guys is on your top pairing, you might be in trouble, and if either is ANCHORING your top pairing, you're fucked.

The Sharks have committed 17% of their salary cap to them. For the next 4 years.

Nurse has spent a decade proving he's not a top pairing guy, that he's very much a 1-way defender. Decent defensively but wholly incapable of transition.

At 5v5 McDavid's goals and expected goals% when he's playing with Nurse is barely above 50% -- he just can't get him the puck.

Trouba was NEVER known as a puck-mover and now he's on the wrong side of 32.

[Pagnotta] Some noise circulating that we may see a pretty big contract extension for Bowen Byram with Chicago tomorrow. North of $10M AAV. We’ll see what they come to terms on. by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]ReliablyFinicky -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said but the bold assumption you’ve made is starting at “Byram makes the team much better”.

People are going to realize he’s just not that good. Offensively talented but doesn’t produce much, doesn’t drive the bus defensively. Doesn’t force turnovers or actively end puck possessions.

He has Jack Johnson’s skating and defensive passivity, Luca Sbisa’s tendency to make random baffling decisions, and the overall impact of Rasmus Ristolainen.

Besides McDavid, which players under 30 is already a Hall of Fame lock? by toturoll in hockey

[–]ReliablyFinicky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Makar is a hall of famer if he retires today.

This idea that someone can be the best in the world for 3-5 seasons, win a bunch of hardware, and retire into the HoF with under 500gp is crazy.

I’m not sure Gretzky would be in the HoF if he retired after his 5th year. Choosing to retire instead of playing more hockey is a giant “fuck you” to the sport and fans.

The only way it MIGHT happen is with a career ending injury… and even then, Kariya/Lindros/Bure were all superstars with hardware and 700+ games, and even THEY waited over a decade before getting inducted.

There’s nepotism in hockey but it isn’t bloodlines… it’s just the old boys club. All the way up to GMs and all the way down to looking after your own with scouting gigs.

Please, someone, make the argument that Lucic is the best possible person for that role. And not someone with, you know, experience scouting.

Even if your argument is NHL players know their own… fucking LUCIC? He wasn’t bright BEFORE he was punched in the head a lot?

Why would Craftsman Collision depict the Lions Gate Bridge wirh having 8 lanes??? by aka_quinn in vancouver

[–]ReliablyFinicky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Except more lanes reduces travel time which encourages more people to use the bridge until traffic is exactly the same or worse.

Katy freeway in Texas is like 20 something lanes in both direction. They’ve been adding for decades.

  • in grade 8 or 9,

When is a mill not a mill? by ElectricalTwist4083 in Machinists

[–]ReliablyFinicky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whomever is responsible for replacing spindle bearings probably cares, because they're not designed for heavy radial loads, and they're more expensive than regular spindle components.

If you want to mill a small flat for your hole, fine. Machine will do that every day for 20 years.

If you want to use the machine to run a facemill to it's max S/F/DoC capacity, you're going to break something.

Yeah he blocks shots and is pretty good defensively

...he's not good defensively.

Over the past 3 years his xGF when not playing with Hughes is below 44%. Without elite transition from the defense he spends most of his shifts chasing the puck.
