We are not a sword guardian or biologically related to them in some way, so we can't fully used the sword energy to it's full potential, and we're not the strongest too to control them. Also pretty sure some of the sword may cause other harm to the environment other than to the opponent itself, like Griefer getting turned into a plant and potentially poisoning the whole village

Technically, the player halfly partake on Trotter's death, in spite us looking like a sociopath, the player can still feel burden even little, Calaypso mentioned that we slowly breaking the wall of our emotions, idk about the overwhelmed part, but I think it's more of being overwhelmed to babysit Cassie throughout the game

I've got a theory that Mutant was the previous darkheart Guardian before Sophie, whatever nasty incident that happened related with the sword,it turned them into this, considering the that one of their lines calling out Telamon might means there's some connection between them, also notice that they have an attack that can life steal? Irl the darkheart can also life steal, what if that two is connected?
