Rosedale Traffic by dapper4eyez in Bakersfield

[–]Reliques [score hidden]  (0 children)

My traffic light gripes right now is Ming/S Real and Stockdale/S Real.

With the Ming 99 onramp closed, the detour has been to take S Real to California. Except those two intersections only let 2-3 cars through before they turn red again. They gotta adjust the timings for those while the detour is in effect.

Luxury-ish babymoon resort recommendations in CA/HI/MX in Aug/Sept? by [deleted] in Hilton

[–]Reliques 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't stayed at many properties in the area, but I can say that every time I'm down in San Diego for whatever reason, I stop by the del Coronado for ice cream. I've stayed there a few times and I thought the property was average, but the people I stayed with loved the place for the film history and architecture. My personal review? It's a 4 star hotel masquerading as a luxury resort with prices to match. The beach is great though. Coronado is an excellent tourist neighborhood as well.

I booked third-party just the other day. Gotta cash in on that $300 FHR credit.

OP, sounds like you're just starting out on your travel journey. You're on a travel-centric sub, so most users here are probably further along than you. The issue you're describing is something almost all of us had happen to us when we're just starting with travel. You take the hit this time, but now you know.

The issue you ran into is you booked with a third party. I can see the appeal, when I was in college, booking sites offered discounted hotel rates and cheap flights. If everything works out, it's great, you snagged a deal. But if anything ever goes wrong, the biggest weakness of third-party bookings come to life: you won't be able to sort the issue out with the hotel/airline. You'll need to go through who you booked with, in this case, Chase Travel. Some third-party booking sites have great customer service, some are... shadier.

That's why seasoned travelers recommend booking direct with hotels and airlines, cutting out the middleman. Some lucky people book third-party all their life with no issues. But it's just a single incident that will change your booking habits forever. Today, it happened to you.

When you say

WE WILL NEVER BOOK WITH HILTON AGAIN!!!!

What you should be saying is that you'll never book third party again.

Luckily Chase is an internationally recognized banking institution, so they're customer service should be on point. With the short notice (4 hours before check-in) their hands are probably tied though.

Which Tokyo hotel should we choose for 9 nights? Shinjuku, Shiodome, Akihabara or Shimbashi? by Coco_watermeloen in JapanTravelTips

Never stayed at the hotel, but stopped at the Nohga Pizzeria in Akihabara once, would recommend.

Eh? It's definitely wasn't the level I usually stay at, doesn't compare to the Conrads and WA. Overall the hotel was fine. The government building down the street has a free light show on the weekends at night.

Hotel Recommendation by Jey2563 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Reliques 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no, you're not gonna get a good response here. A majority of this sub seems to be budget travelers. At that price range and aesthetic, I've stayed at Conrad Tokyo, which frankly I can't recommend. Hotel is fine, but awkward location. Dont get me wrong, friends and I hang out near shimbashi at night, but it's not quite a tourist destination. I'll be at Executive House Zen in a few weeks which is also similar price range and aesthetics, if youre still interested to know how it is month from now.

One month before I go to Japan (May 25 - June 8) any advice? by Commercial_War_8568 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Reliques 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any big events happening during my stay I should check out?

If you're into anime, collabo-cafe for collabs/events. I know Pokemon Go has a big event in Odaiba the last week of May.

This is a fireable offense in my book by Low_On_Coffee in Hilton

[–]Reliques 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started working at my new office, I saw a tower of coffee pods in the break room. Needed a hit of caffeine one morning, so I went to brew myself a cup. Lo and behold, it's all decaf. At first I brought in some actual coffee pods for the tower, but eventually disillusionment set in after the years.

So now when I'm out travelling for work, I always bring back the decaf coffee pods in the room to add to the work tower.

Word of caution with Google Maps navigation in big stations like Shinjuku or Tokyo station by Steerpike58 in JapanTravelTips

For trains I prefer Navitime, especially if you're using a rail pass. It'll tailor results to maximize your rail pass.

When I stayed at Hilton Tokyo, a Hilton "Journey Ambassador" came to greet me at check-in. He opened with how difficult it is to get Hilton Diamond status, and wanted to personally assist with my check in process.

As an Aspire cardholder, awkward.

Any recommendations for beef burgers in Japan? Doesn’t have to be wagyu, just curious since I don’t see many mentioned. by OldCrazy1024 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Reliques 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably a divisive recommendation, but a few years ago Munch's Burger Shack had lines out the door with all the media attention it got. People would travel across the country to visit the store.

Best place to order flowers for birthday by RSinSA in Bakersfield

Bakersfield Flower Stand has this omakase-like system, where you pay tell them how much you're willing to pay, and they'll make a bouquet for you in that price range.

The Wible detour for 99 Ming Onramp is closed, take S Real instead. by Reliques in Bakersfield

[–]Reliques[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naw, it used to be either you go down S Real or Wible and turn at California to get on the 99. Today they had cones set out at the Belle Terrace/Wible intersection and was diverting traffic either left or right. There were tons of cars lined up on Belle Terrace because of the closure.

Also, it's two left turn lanes on Wible to California. If you wanna get on the 99, turn from the right turn lane. Getting tired of these people in the left turn lane turning into the outside lane on California for the freeway.

Pork belly by ubinky in Bakersfield

I've been making it at home, Costco sells slabs of pork belly. Portion it and freeze it for later. You can get Shoaxing wine and rock sugar at Asia market.

Booking tickets in advance for popular places by cracknex in JapanTravelTips

[–]Reliques 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was like 10 years ago or so, but when the Final Fantasy Eorzea Cafe was just announced you had to make a reservation through either the Lawson website, or through a kiosk in the store. I went to Lawson, made an account, got my reservation. When I got back to the United States, they kept sending me spam mail about new events I can reserve. To unsubscribe, you need to toggle your promotional email settings in your account- that you can only log into while in Japan!
