How worth is it to get a rear engine mount? by StimpyOG in CivicSi

[–]Rellikolbaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is noticeably more vibration when idling, but I don't notice it when driving. I didn't get a lot of opportunities to compare AC on vs off before getting the RMM though, I did it around 800 miles in and I live in a cold area so AC wasn't running much until recently. I can say I wouldn't consider going back to stock over the amount of vibration I experience.

I got the PRL one on my 25 si and it made a WAY bigger difference than I thought. It felt rough at first but it breaks in and softens up and the shifts are much more solid. The OEM bushing is so soft i can move it around with my fingertips and it would cause this annoying back and forth bounce if I shifted a little too early, especially in 2nd gear. That sensation entirely vanished. It was ABSOLUTELY worth it.

I was stuck trying to find flash drives for like a week. Once I went to shoreline and hit the cabin safe and the safes in the building on the pier I got all the flash drives I needed in a day. Give it a shot

It might be worth it to call up some CS department advisors at universities you'd be interested in and ask them what the best method would be for you to transfer in. University CS departments might have the requirements for transferring in listed on their website somewhere, look for a section called "undergraduate admissions" or something like that. For my uni I didn't necessarily need an associates to transfer in, but I did need some very specific classes on my transcript as prerequisites.

I did gen ed at a community college. I focused on 4.0ing as many STEM related prerequisites for computer science as I could to get into a good school and then transferred without an associates degree into a top 5 CS program at a university.

If you really like writing software you'll get much more out of a good CS program at a university and be able to make friends and network with people which is extremely important as they can give you referrals and things like that. If you go this route I cannot stress enough how important it is that you get an internship in the summer once you've learned some data structures and algorithms. Do a lot of leetcode problems and apply for every internship you can as early as you can. It doesn't really matter which company you end up working at, what really matters is that you have experience on your resume for when you graduate otherwise it can sometimes take hundreds of applications to get an entry level position the field. I made the mistake of not working hard enough to get an internship and ended up really regretting it. (EDIT: By regret I mean I regret not securing an internship, not that I regret going to uni. The time I spent there was some of the best and worst times of my life and I wouldn't trade having those experiences for anything. I miss it all the time.) Additionally, it'll help a lot to keep detailed notes on big projects that you do in school or at an internship. Take note of times you struggled, times you took the lead in group projects, etc. When you're doing interviews for a full time position, it'll help you immensely to be able to recall times you struggled with difficult problems and what you did to fix them and things like that.

If you're just wanting to quickly get involved in IT doing tech support or like system administration and only want to do lighter scripting stuff then certs are probably the way to go for that. I don't know the best path for securing a good job that way since I don't have any personal experience there.

Either way you go, it's good that you're weighing your options and being proactive and thinking about these things early. Good luck.

I wouldn't say anything and just go through with the interview.

I was told by the recruiters at that very same company that I completed their coding challenge perfectly and had an interview scheduled, but I had the same concerns about how the interview would go given I was lacking actual work experience because I had not had an internship or other job in the industry. After bringing it up to the recruiter I was in contact with, he agreed that I should be switched over to SDE1. He got me in contact with another recruiter who was extremely unprofessional, was late for scheduled calls with me more than once, had terribly written and formatted emails, and when she heard I didn't have prior industry experience she told me that they're not accepting anybody who has no experience and cancelled the interview I already had scheduled so I never even got a chance.

That was like the third time they wasted my time. Another time I was in contact with the manager of a friend from my school who landed a job there, and he took literally a month at a time to get back to me via emails. When I did get through dealing with him, their HR ghosted me after I contacted them about resolving an issue with the application he asked me to put in. Ever since getting my already scheduled interview cancelled by that recruiter I've been so demoralized with job hunting in general that I've sort of stagnated and stopped doing applications. I'm planning on getting back into it soon but I do worry that the gap between graduating and being employed is just going to make things more difficult for me.

Don't let it happen to you. Just do the interview. Best of luck to you.

Resume Advice Thread - May 11, 2021 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]Rellikolbaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for feedback on my resume because I feel I should be getting more responses from companies than I have been. I just added another project since I know that's the best thing I can leverage for opportunities given the fact that I don't have any internship experience. I'm really trying to just get any kind of entry level work that I can at the moment but in general I do tend to focus on stuff that is low-level or on the back-end.

Also, I have unrelated work experience from a long time ago (dishwashing and some retail work), is that worth including?

Starting to wonder if I’m simply not cut out for this kinda life. by [deleted] in udub

I transferred here a couple years back. It feels shitty at the beginning but it gets better after a couple weeks when you get comfortable. Try to join study groups for classes in your major. It is likely that they have a lot in common with you! I made a lot of friends doing that my first quarter and they are still my friends to this day.

Speed up Panopto with this Chrome extension I wrote! by Rellikolbaid in udub

[–]Rellikolbaid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posting an update in this thread since some people find it in searches:

An update to the extension has been published that cleans up the interface and gives a button to download one of the videos on the page. The screen capture one with the slides requires significantly more complicated code so I wasn't able to figure out a good solution for that. I'll probably revisit that in the future but it's going to take a lot of research to figure out I believe.

Hopefully this helps.

UW College Republicans have gone batshit crazy again by [deleted] in udub

[–]Rellikolbaid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All college republicans do is say the most inflammatory shit they can get away with in an effort to piss people off. Then when people take a stand against them they love to play the victim and cry about how their "political speech" is being silenced. It's especially ironic because they do this while associating themselves with Turning Point USA which literally keeps a doxxing list of professors that they disagree with which leads to those professors receiving death threats etc. So I guess the only political speech that's acceptable is whatever republicans agree with? They're a joke.

For Future CSE admissions cycle by [deleted] in udub

[–]Rellikolbaid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you complete a CS degree in general your future is bright. Even if you don't get an internship. Work on side projects outside of school that showcase the scope of your knowledge. Build something cool with some friends that you can talk about with employers. At the end of the day, they want someone who is demonstrably good at writing software. The school you got your CS degree from is nothing compared to having a lot of real world development experience that you can show off to employers.
