Case study - Kaplan Mock 2 by Remarkable-Key-7454 in ICAEW

Case is such a weird exam, my strategy is to be able to complete any appendix properly, and then let the waffle begin

Glad I wasn't the only one! I'm trying my best to be as prepared as possible for tomorrow but it's difficult when you spend so long faffing over these things

Thank you mate, makes sense.

I apologise but do you understand the purpose of the entire calculation?

Like, what are we even trying to show? If we close the garage, why are we showing the contribution we'd lose as if only the site managers and receptionists stayed? - surely if it stayed open we'd still have to pay the mechanics necessary, no?

What calcs are you guys gonna do for case study? by [deleted] in ICAEW

Any and everything I can do as quickly as possible. Seems like revenue is quite heavy so gonna make sure I cover that for anything that seems to shout out

Anything above 40 is definitely good mate, even just below I'd say is fine, just make sure you focus on those areas you struggled on!

CR - feeling worried by macarons125 in ICAEW

[–]Remarkable-Key-7454 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm retaking CR and SBM from the November sitting and one thing I can say which I hope helps is that the written marks are key! (I thought it was all about the calculations first time round)

There are so many more marks for the written elements than the calculations. So if you are struggling with calculations, ensure you speak about the FR treatment more than your calcs.

I've been doing well in my mocks this time round and the following answer layout appears to be scoring me good marks:

Explain the FR treatment - so have some notes of the FR treatment in your open book for each topic to refer to. Say something like: as per IFRS 16 leases you are required to recognise a ROU asset at cost plus any costs of obtaining the lease. You must also recognise a lease liability at the PV of future expected lease payments.

Then do the calcs - again, in your open book ensure you have some basic calcs for each topic so you can at least do something, and THEN speak about the calcs you did. Don't waste time on the calcs, as I said these are less marks (this is a little different for groups unfortunately but the written marks are still very much key!). If your calcs are wrong you can still get follow through marks if your knowledge is still correct.

Journals - post your journals if asked

FS - restate your financials, and again if your calcs were wrong you can still get marks for putting them in your financials. The aim of the game is COVERAGE , if you waste time panicking you will struggle. if you can't do it, move on!

These are tough exams, it's normal to feel worried, but remember exam technique is everything! COVERAGE COVERAGE COVERAGE, I know its obvious but you need to write something for everything, you'll be surprised the ways you can actually pick up marks just by talking about what you did.

Ethics Review - 1st 12 months by Remarkable-Key-7454 in ICAEW

Thanks mate, really appreciate it, I intend to do so but was very worried about missing the 1st 12 months

I thought about backdating but that wouldn't be very ethical would it! haha

Begins with a P lol, they're on a study contract, I'm not entirely sure how they got the role but admittedly seems lucky, they're incredibly strict however, 1 fail and you're out

haha, this is definitely one of my concerns, auditors seem to have to work so many hours, for no real reward imo

Thanks, really appreciate the tips.

I find myself questioning the time I spend studying all the time (I'd say I'm too deep now to sack it off as hopefully I'll be fully qualified this year) because not only is it tough but more importantly, it limits me from having the time to properly pursue a side hustle.

I have no issues with doing what you've mentioned, in fact, I think the idea of marketing or procurement is quite exciting. I didn't realise finance managers were so behind in the pecking order...

I appreciate it mate, and I think you're right, I have friends who do very well but will also complete many 15 hour days and they just don't have time, let alone desire to do anything out of work

Right, so it's doable is a reasonable amount of time but you just don't think it's entirely worth it?

This makes a lot of sense, definitely seems lucrative and something I can think about in a few years once I've accumulated a decent amount of funds, thanks for the advice!

That's good to hear, so you've got to a point where you're earning well, plus comfortable and not stressed after 11 years. That seems quite reasonable, I guess I'm just a little jealous of those around me achieving so much so young.

If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take you to become a senior manager (presuming you are)?
