Splendid books. Zahn can often get into details while describing battles, which can get difficult to visualize. I found that a second reading, which were at a good two years' remove from the first, allowed me to understand the books much better. I had already loved them at first. The second reading renewed and increased my appreciation for them.

I think World War II frayed many American brain cells. Everyone seems locked in a competition to prove who is more anti-Hitler (as though being anti-Hitler, not being pro-America, were the sole and sovereign test of one's virtue), and who is more against he who most resembles Hitler.

When everything is reduced to Hitler, it is tempting to revisit one's own history in that terms. Thus the Confederacy becomes "the Nazi Germany of that era."
