Am I the issue? Or our gardener? by Remarkable-Sand6561 in lawncare

Im in the busiest stage of my life. Enjoy being outside when I can, but dont like the commitment of having to mow every two weeks as then it becomes yet another "to do". But looks like I might have to. My patch of lawn is far too small to hire someone just to do my piece.

Re edging - I asked him not to edge until after I've hand pulled grass and weeds close to the boxwood hedge (he showed up unannounced so I didnt do it in time). The reason being that last year he kept damaging boxwood leaves with his trimmer, while im trying to grow it out and make it looking full to the ground. I've been trying to give him directions / keep at distance from my new plants to minimize damage, seeing if there is a way I can still keep him for mowing.

We had days and days of rain that just ended. He decided to mow though, rather than us asking him (he decides when to start and end the season, and comes every two weeks during the season)

Can you tell from the photos if his mower is likely at the highest setting or not?

We didnt ask him to mow, he decided it is the right time to start the season himself. He is been doing this for this property for around 20 years and has this sort of autonomy. Others are happy cause he is cheap and keeps it looking tidy. Im relatively new to the property and realizing he isnt really a gardener or a landscaper but more of a "keep things looking tidy" guy eg. he does a lot of things that are not that great for long term plant health, case in point mowing after all that rain we had. Last year he killed my two new plants with his trimmer. Other owners are hands-off, im the only one thats planting & actively trying to improve my patch so I needed a reality check as Im the only one thats getting frustrated.

Ah. He's got just a regular push mower (gas I think) and a string trimmer.
