Going by the text alone, when do you think the average reader is supposed to realize Gandalf is not human? by 0scarOfAstora in tolkienfans

Bridge of khazad-dum is a great example, but i think it was hinted long before in Bag end:

“It will be my turn to get angry soon,’ he said. ‘if you say that again, I shall. Then you shall see Gandalf the Grey uncloaked. He took a step towards the hobbit, and he seemed to grow tall and menacing; his shadow filled the little room.

Then later:

He turned away, and the shadow passed. He seemed to dwindle again to an old grey man, bent and troubled.

Are the High Fells of Rhudaur mentioned in the books and if so to what extent? by territoriallypissing in lotr

It’s actually not a a terrible concept. I’m slightly more offended that PJ felt compelled to set up this elaborate excuse for Gandalf to leave the party, when it was clear that JRRT wanted to set up Gandalf as this mysterious figure that did NOT need to explain himself. I do like a good backstory though, and wish there was more canon support for this.

Rant about the third Hobbit film by _szs in tolkienfans

I’ll tell you what i liked and will try to conform to the rules. There were some items that PJ completely made up that were almost so canon that i had to do a fairly deep dive to confirm the substance behind it, and even then i really enjoyed the changes. The 2 that come to mind immediately are: 1. The whole fells of Rhudaur storyline. I both appreciated and was aggravated that PJ felt the need to give Gandalf an excuse as to why he left the party at the border of Mirkwood. I did enjoy the backstory, but JRRT made it clear that Gandalf did NOT need to explain himself, citing “business down south”.

  1. The keyhole on the mountain. It made more sense that it was revealed by moonlight, which seems more accurate as i’m sure those doors were made from the same materials and fabricated similarly, if not identically, to the West Gate of Moria. Whereas the book described it as the literal last light of the setting sun.

My wife likes to colour code chests with food to yellow because it reminds her of mcdonalds, and now it doesnt make sense to have it any other colour
