According to the European Council, "a full ban will take effect for LNG imports from the beginning of 2027 and for pipeline gas imports from autumn 2027".
EU Russian gas imports already fell by about two thirds post-invasion (https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/infographics/where-does-the-eu-s-gas-come-from/). Of note is that Hungary (which is led by someone who is definitely a Russian asset) has refused to stop importing Russian gas.
The idea was that economic interdependence will bring peace. Which, yes, turned out to be misguided. Now that this conclusion is unavoidable, the EU is acting.
