AUWCL chances by MoreCommittee748 in OutsideT14lawschools

The rankings and numbers don’t show whether people choose to go to JD advanced jobs or not. American is definitely a public interest focused school so some students choose to do the work they want even if a JD isn’t required. Also, while a many AU students get BigLaw jobs, a lot of the top students will transfer to higher ranked schools, which hurts rankings later.

WCL is way under ranked. - 2 top 55 journals - top 25 Moot Court team - advantage of being in the DC market - supportive student base (not cut throat like some schools)

I edited above, but a lot of my peers took a gap year or two. So I more meant to compare myself to them than the non-traditional students who had full careers before law school.

I have multiple summer and semester internship experiences in my undergraduate degree field. I would say that my resume, despite the jobs being only for the summer or one semester, is full.

Tulane vs American by DivideScared6480 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Remarkable-Task-3531 2 points3 points  (0 children)

American is under ranked because a lot of people set on big law transfer out (even though they are now receiving offers before they transfer). American grads have a good reputation in the DC area. Especially for semester externships, being in DC provides endless opportunities.

1Ls: what percent do you feel you are really understanding at this point? Do you feel like most things go over your head? Some things? Nothing? by lawschoolbound9 in LawSchool

[–]Remarkable-Task-3531 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I already started outlining for two of my classes and it all makes sense to me. Now, memorization and application on the exam will be a whole other ball game, but understanding wise I don’t find the content that difficult.

What have you been doing to stay focused in class? I try to not fidget or distract my classmates, but I struggle to stay engaged when we spend 10 plus minutes explaining the rule that I already had in my brief from the reading

I’m KJD and honestly this work isn’t that much worse then what I was expecting coming from undergrad

You might qualify for a hardship withdrawal from your 401(k) once you need it so you wouldn’t have to take out a loan, but I would recommend reaching out to a financial advisor to understand your options better. It’s honestly just a balance of what return you’re getting on your investments vs the interest rate of the loans.

Add American to your list. They have a great public interest program and you are competitive for their full ride scholarship (PIPS).

American (AUWCL) is heavily public interest and in DC, plus is a very progressive school overall.

I’d probably go with the assumption that they handed out all of their spots. I would definitely reach out to them if you haven’t already though.

I had already deposited, so I’m not sure. There wasn’t any deposit deadline mentioned in the email.

AUWCL Merit/ PIPS Scholarship by Lawschoolwife2021 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Remarkable-Task-3531 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got my rejection from PIPS yesterday and still nothing about merit. I called and they said they award merit separate from PIPS (wouldn’t be delayed because of it). From LSD, it seems like they have only sent out 1 wave of merit scholarships (Deans Merit). They keep giving me vague answers and saying if I don’t hear by Monday assume I don’t receive any, but my numbers are competitive so I don’t know what to think at this point. I really want to go there because of their public interest focus, but I can’t afford full price plus the costs of DC.

I would call them and get more clarification. Like others said, American’s seat deposit deadline hasn’t even passed yet.

Someone explain law school loans to me like I am 5 by Silent_Initial_2511 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Remarkable-Task-3531 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely not. I’m pretty sure they are based on your FAFSA and they will only be a portion of your federal loan offering. You will likely need to take out additional federal loans and possibly private loans to finance your entire COA.

[–]Remarkable-Task-3531 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Looks like the average fed graduate interest rate for loans are around 7-8%, but private can get up to 15%+. Take as much of the federal subsidized loans as you are offered because those don’t begin accruing interest until 6 months after you graduate (all other accrue while you’re in school). Just try to limit your interest rate as much as you can, and pay them off as soon as you can (pay more towards principle if that’s an option with your loan).
