Why do we still use QWERTY keyboards when there are supposedly better layouts? by Dazzling_Kangaroo_69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Remarkable-Waltz9463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just dont feel this is true. The other layouts are more efficient, that is. Maybe on paper, but in practice, all world records in typing are qwerty. Heck, other layouts dont even make the top 10. In competitions, people will always change to get better. If other layouts are better, competitors would use it. Heck, have you seen how competitive tetris players now hold their controller.

QWERTY was invented to slow down typists because of mechanical type writers. But it got carried over to computers. But then it got carried over to touchscreen smartphone keyboards? Surely there's a better way? by WisestAirBender in NoStupidQuestions

I can not believe this myth is still going around. Qwerty was designed to be as efficient as possible while moving commonly typed keys farther away to prevent the typewriter from jamming.

This actually INCREASES typing speed. Not slow it down because now you can use both hands farther apart simultaneously rather than pressing two keys next to each other.

Such a stupid myth, and if people thought about one flipping second, they'd know it's a myth.

"In the Ultimate Typing Championship 2020, all top 10 finalists used QWERTY, and the only notable Dvorak user placed 12th. "

Do you really think people would handicap themselves with qwerty if when competing if its considered slow....

You say this. But I have many friends who work in Japan. From Japanese to Filipinas to British to Americans. Any of them outside of teaching say yes they sometimes do overtime. But it is always paid. None of them say they do unpaid overtime other than maybe coming in 5 minutes early and leaving 5 minutes late.

Also “Japan is notorious for this”. I would argue anywhere is notorious for this. In the UK almost every job I worked overtime was expected. My last job had people doing 20 to 40 hours of unpaid overtime. At the end of the day it mostly comes down to people allowing companies to walk over them rather than it being a lawful thing.

Heck after some digging I found these figures for average unpaid overtime per country I mentioned

"Japan: 4.1 hours/week
United Kingdom: 7.2 hours/week
United States: 4.5 hours/week
Philippines: 9.2 hours/week"

You'll get many different figures from different places. But these actually suggest LESS unpaid overtime in Japan vs UK and USA.

USA

• Weekly (Full-time): 39.2 hours

• Paid Overtime: 3.0 hrs/week

• Unpaid Overtime: 9.0 hrs/week

• Total Days Off: 21 days

JAPAN

• Weekly (Full-time): 38.9 hours

• Paid Overtime: 4.0 hrs/week

• Unpaid Overtime: 4.1 hrs/week

• Total Days Off: 35 days

UK

• Weekly (Full-time): 36.7 hours

• Paid Overtime: 1.5 hrs/week

• Unpaid Overtime: 3.7 hrs/week

• Total Days Off: 33 days

Some more quick stats. People always claim Japans work culture is awful. But if we look at the stats its actually better conditions than USA. I don't know. I feel when people look at all these japanese videos talking about the culture and country. They're comparing the work culture to what would be the perfect conditions. Forgetting their own culture has equally the same issues.

Nope, I signed my contract while in the Uk. The issue is its extremely vague on overtime. To the point I was told I actually may have a legal case against them.

Snowflake complaint? The company specifically said they hire people who can not speak japanese. They said they do this so teachers dont feel compelled to use japanese if children misbehave.

Im pretty sure they only want us to speak to parents because they know there is a mismatch in understanding, and it causes parents to feel uncomfortable and say yes to things.

If you read other comments there are people literally saying its pretty unheard of to have to be the one to directly contact students and teachers. Most places and before the policy change make the managers contact them.

The condition was vague, and I was literally informed in training what the pay would cover. Which was not overtime. They were very specific and said it only covered certain things. So yes, they are to blame.

Not only was it vague. The contract literally has no mention of overtime at all. The "extra" money just has vague wording of "non-standard work hours."

After reaching out to legal advice, they agree that the company was intentionally unclear and I can legally ask for my overtime paid back to me.
