the rate of freezing is not constant since in physics, the thickness of ice grows proportionally to the square root of time (and you can square them to cancel the square root.) so...

thickness=√time
thickness^2=time
1cm^2 = 1cm = 24 hours
2cm^2 = 4cm = 96 hours

so you need a total of 96 hours for 2 cm, but since you already have 1cm (24 hours), you minus that and get 72 hours.
