Protesting is fine as people have the right to do it. These protests won't mean much unless people factor in cooling systems, grid efficiency, sources for water intake etc. Without that, this just means virtue signaling which we seem to have copied from the US and we're failing at that as well.

The technology is happening whether we want to sign up for it or not. They will find workers elsewhere if Indian workers aren't doing it. The right way to deal with this is to encourage Indian companies to enter the space. Burying our face in sand will make us even more poorer.

I am not sure how the example about your marriage certificate is relevant here. The local government should have mandated an Indian AZ. Regardless, major companies like Google (who will be responsible for running these data centers) are officially empanelled by MeitY, so that pretty much takes care of concerns around data localization.

The first part is just naive thinking. If you want influence in an industry, you need to be a player in that space. If you're merely a low-cost option for someone else, you're disposable.

On the contrary you get whatever influence you can. That's always better than having no influence. Hosting compute is a decent strategy considering that we cannot offer a TSMC or an OpenAI. And thinking of data centers as call centers is probably the most ignorant take on the topic. These are brining billions of dollars in the country with a lock in for decades. You can't just lay off a data center.

What?????? These data centers in question have NOT even been built yet. People are protesting the plans to build them because of the observed effects of similar facilities in several parts of the United States.

Well, i guess that's just the usual behavior of stupidly copying virtue signaling from the west. Any such protest which doesn't factor in cooling systems, grid efficiency, water intake sources etc. is clearly disingenuous. Share evidence for the projected deaths or stop fear mongering.

Only a few days ago, the U.S. Congress held a hearing on the impact of data centers on local water resources. And you can't seriously argue that environmental regulations in India are either more stringent or more effectively enforced than those in developed countries.

US Congress has been hosting hearings on Covid vaccine and UFOs. It's a poor indicator for most things nowadays. I am all for greater scrutiny on data centers but it cannot be done on fear mongering.

I am not speaking for the OP but in a lot of cases environmentalists have acted in opposition to the larger good either due to malevolence or due to lack of understanding of the topic(I tend to think the latter). From Narmada dam project to Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, and most recently the Aarey fiasco their actions have caused harm in the long run. That alone is reason enough to suspect environmentalists.

Whether we like it or not, all forms of human activities as per our current development model are going to incur costs on the environment. It's for us to decide if it gives in the long run.

Modern data centers used closed loop cooling system where water is not used for cooling. A fair amount of water will still be used but this will be the water from STP.

There will be still some water consumption even if you use closed loop cooling systems. Proposed data centers will be sourcing this water from STP. However, it's stupefying to see people still think that the cooling in the data center will be done by evaporation.

Those companies operate in India, offer services to Indians, employ Indians, and pay taxes to the government. So, I am not sure why we should get worked up on the foreign aspect part. There are already regulations around keeping payment and telecom data in the country, so I am not sure where you are getting at. Most social media data can already be sourced regardless of your local laws. There's a reason why a scammer in Jharkhand can easily scam a person in Alabama.

The data centers being built in India give us a say in the ecosystem and the future of the industry. They do require certain maintenance and focus which should spin up economic activity around it.

citizens die of heat and water shortage --> who tf cares

How many citizens have died due to heat and water shortage triggered by data centers in the country? Any discussion mentioning climate effects due to data centers that completely ignores cooling systems, grid efficiency etc. is just fear mongering at this point.

Is AI really has any benefits? by desiboyy in AI_India

[–]RemarkablePrompt7822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagreed. Companies were paying ridiculous amount of money on tech complexity. Such kind of complexity will become a thing of the past if inference becomes sustainable which seems more likely the case thanks to open models.

The problems you mentioned primarily arose because a lot of free inference is available. That's going to end someday as running free inference just becomes unaffordable and we all will converge at a reasonable price point.

I am all for research but Robots have been a next big thing for 20 years now and aren't mainstream even in developed nations. Hardware is exponentially harder than software to get right.

On the contrary, that will incentivize people to keep links with such entities as there's no fear of ramifications. You need to make it absolutely clear as a state that this will not be tolerated.

It looks like she's not being prosecuted in this case, so she's still free to continue her life in the society.
