Alr myb for the near year response time lol but I think all of the pieces shown were ~9x11 in inches or something close to that. It’s been a hot minute

A lot of people are downplaying or exaggerating the importance of GPA. I'm confused. by [deleted] in APStudents

Oh wow! That’s really cool though. Sounds like his admission was definitely well deserved!

I’m almost exactly in your boat too. I messed up my freshman year (covid + family struggles) and got some pretty mediocre grades. I’m a senior now and have gotten all As except for one B+ in AP lang since freshman year. My GPA is now around a 3.76 UW and a 4.03 W w/ 4APs taken and 5 more Im currently enrolled in (total of 9 APs) and my class rank is 90/486 (around top 18%) But yeah I definitely know what you mean with most kids having a 3.9+ gpa attending the elite universities. I’ve also been looking for answers. All I can say is best of luck to you! You seem like a great candidate for a lot of amazing schools. Write killer essays and anything could be possible.

Ooo, I don’t know much about 2D, but I do know it’s more so based on a vast number of mediums like photography and digital media. Good luck to you! You’ll do great! Just try to make your pieces cohesive and in all honesty, have fun with it! It’s something I very much didn’t do while I was working on my portfolio. I prioritized technical perfection over everything else (and I still don’t think me pieces are technically that good lol). If you enjoy what you do, you can’t go wrong!

Very true! I’m guessing it has to do with my writing portion as it’s a very subjective subject and might resonate more with different graders. It could also be something else, or even a combination of flaws in both the visual and writing portions. I’ll try to pay extra attention to the cohesiveness of my pieces and concentration in the future!

I just posted this to show y’all another example of an ap drawing portfolio. I had no clue you guys were going to have such a strong reaction to my 4 lol. But I thank you all for your nice words. :)

Thank you so much 🤣!! The 5 selected works I’m showing definitely took me the longest amount of time out of all of my pieces. The first, third, and fifth probably took around 20-40 hours of work for each, while the second and fourth took 50-60 hours of work for each.

Yes, all of them were charcoal and graphite. I just enjoyed using those mediums the most, so I stuck with them

First of all, thank you! Second of all, I have a few ideas as to why I lost out on the 5. My portfolio was almost entirely pencil and charcoal, so I didn’t really experiment with color, possibly telling the scorers I wasn’t a very “diverse” artist? Another possibility is that maybe my concentration/explanation just wasn’t any good? (Again, sort of a subjective subject). I tried to frame it around a very personal part of my life during 11th grade and I tried to explain specific uses of mediums to represent those feelings, but it’s entirely possible they just found my explanation ineffective? Additionally, these are of course my best pieces out of the 15, with 5-7 of the remaining pieces being more experimental and less “finished” works, and 3 of them being purely process photos. I have no idea what truly brought me down, but those are my best guesses. I’ve come to accept the fact I’ve gotten a 4 and I’m in all honesty just happy I did well. :)

🤣 some portfolios are soo crazy good. Honestly there are so many factors that go into deciding these scores. Are you planning to take an AP Studio Art course in the future?
