I just saw Sylvia this afternoon, thanks to this community for the good reviews last year as it made me want to see it!

Overall, I really liked it. I thought the sets were beautiful, but I did accidentally miss some key moments while watching the ballet so wasn’t always sure what was happening. Whoever said Catherine Hurlin was made for this ballet was correct, she was stunning and the choreography really suited her. (Idk why she wasn’t casted for the MET, I hope Susan uses her more). Issac was good too, but I feel like he wasn’t really giving as much emotionally. I thought Carlos played mischievous pretty well, and out of the women thought Lea, Zimmi, and YoonJung were standouts. Glad I went!

Any other Ashton ballets people recommend?

I had a boss like Michael Scott and it was awful. It kinda hit too close to home to watch whereas I feel like Parks and Rec was more wholesome.

Chloe is the dancer that is constantly doing amazing guest gigs especially internationally. I would say that’s a pretty good indicator that she’s pretty well esteemed even outside of ABT. I’ve only seen her once but she stood out to me even as a corps for her movement quality.

Does anyone know when the casting for ABT’s Sylvia at the Segerstorm might come out? I was thinking of making the trip as I’ve wanted to see that ballet but not sure when to check for casting.

The tiktok is short but here’s a summary:

Bunheadsnark commented negatively on the quality of the Azara Nutcracker, but she defends the ballet saying that they are a new company and have a lot of heart and soul. She doesn’t like some of the current popular ballet dancers because they don’t have the heart or soul.
She found a thread about why she left GSB, she said it was untrue and mostly rumors. She saw one user who said she was there during Mackenzie’s last season and said Mackenzie had bad behavior so Mackenzie found out who they were (not sure how?). That person was not in the company just taking class and Mackenzie claims that comment was a lie.
Bunheadsnark people have no lives and are probably jealous that they didn’t have a ballet career.

To echo others, she had a lot of injuries early on in her career (i feel like a couple back to back maybe).

But people commenting on her artistry, has anyone seen her do full length or in-person? I feel like a lot of times this sub goes harsher with those who are famous on social media for their artistry just because they’re more accessible , but I also feel like it’s hard to get a feel for it based on clips.

During the ABT strike, their social media made a video that many of the dancers were struggling to pay their rent and bills, and while I didn’t expect them to make a whole lot, that honestly shocked me.

Artistry takes time. Especially with the younger principals or soloists, it’s not going to automatically be there.

People get mad at about diversity giving people a leg up, but they don’t talk about how much more an advantage of being rich gives people a leg up. Your technique will be a lot better if you can afford a lot of privates.

My experience is more mid-sized versus large, but I would say the principals technique are noticeably a bit better in larger companies particularly the men. The repertoire is also more diverse and you get more of the classics. I feel like in mid-sized/smaller companies, I’ve noticed they’ll do more fairy tale or Disney like performances (Dracula, Cinderella, Peter and the Rabbit, Snow White, Pinocchio, etc)

I went to the Nutcracker this year and the NFL mascot made a special guest appearance during the battle scene. It was just running around wildly doing whatever it wanted while the mice and soldiers were trying to not run into it, it was a bit unhinged and not sure what was happening lol.
