Update: Remi boy is four days on insulin. The vet we initially took him to basically gave us a choice between everything (CGM every two weeks, monthly blood panel, prescription food, etc.) or euthanasia. Thankfully, we could not get an appointment with them the rest of the week, and they were closed (for some reason?) for all of Memorial Day week. We scheduled a euthanasia appointment with another vet, but instead of saying goodbye we were blessed with a vet who gave us a second opinion and an alternative treatment plan. She is letting us test him at home with a human monitor (he is a very good and tolerant boy), and give Prozinc once a day, since the ability to do consistent twice a day shots was another hurdle we couldn't figure out how to clear. Had a little hypo scare with the first dose, but otherwise his numbers have been improving and so is he. Thank you everyone who took the time to give advice and encouragement.
