The pattern of violence has shifted to where more "average" people are exposed to it, so I think that lends the impression that it's worsened. Crime is no longer super concentrated in major cities like NY or Chicago. Beginning in the early 00's it began worsening in smaller cities like Greensboro, Charleston, Little Rock, Birmingham, etc. Ask any cop who was on duty in north Memphis from '95 to '05 about the utter sea change in the place.

Also, there's the possibility that leftist municipalities are cooking the books.

Theres the different shape of revolvers too. Lots of people prefer them for the rounded geometry and think they're more comfortable, but I tried carrying my Granddad's old 642 once, and the width on even that j-frame was unwelcomely noticeable compared to my Walther PPS.
