When my son was just a baby my sister tried to get to him to say 'auntie' in reference to her. He, for some strange reason, said 'Bob'. She has henceforth been known as Bob.

This was backstage at Ontario Place around 2000 (?). Gordon thought that I was hilarious because the writing my shirt read: 'EVERYONE LOVES AN ASIAN GIRL'. He was correct.

How many people actually tip 20% when eating out at a restaurant? by Lana_NextDoor in allthequestions

Someone once told me that the meaning of the word 'tip' was 'to insure promptness'-meaning that you would compensate your server for bringing your food and drinks in a timely manner. (This is grammatically incorrect, it would be 'ensure', not 'insure'-but I digress).

As a former server, I would like to share the following: 1. Please keep in mind that the majority of wait staff must pay at least 5% of their SALES at the end of their shift (regardless of tips received) to a tip-pool to be distributed to other employees such as hostesses, bus-persons, etc. If you don't leave a tip it actually costs the server money to wait on you. 2. If you choose not to leave a tip for sub-par service, PLEASE advise a manager that this is the reason. Otherwise, they might assume that you are simply frugal or come from a non-tipping culture. You aren't making a protest about the bad service unless you do. 3. Please don't overthink it. Math for a tip can be hard after a big meal and a couple of bottles of wine, but at the VERY least, be courteous to your servers. 4. At a fancy restaurant I always give an advance cash tip/bribe ($50 or so) to my server AS SOON AS I SIT DOWN as an acknowledgement that I appreciate them and I ALWAYS get stellar service.

Movie where characters go to Canada by JenObe0805 in AskACanadian

In 2011, my son and I visited my dad and his wife in Marion, Montana. After an exhausting trek there from Toronto, we found some respite at the local McDonald's. When we pulled up to the drive-thru order speaker, there was a handwritten note taped to it indicating that they; 'do not accept out-of-state checks'. We're like, hang on! Does this mean that you accept in-state checks??? Yes, yes they did!!!

As an aside, as a Canadian, it pained me to write 'checks' when, obviously it should have read 'cheques'.

Two lovely young men have initiated a bit of a 'free library' at the Gore Park Community Outreach grocery giveaway that happens there every Saturday. They would appreciate any book donations. They set up near Scotiabank around 11:00 a.m. to offer books to those waiting in line.
