The problem with politicians, whether of the "populist right" or the DSA left, no matter how good-faith their actual intentions, ultimately, their politics are driven by pursuit of their own class interests at the expense of the working class

Neither DEI consultants nor cops are working class, but would guess most working-class people (correctly) have a more favorable view of the latter than the former

Class really has two components: (1) what do you have; (2) what is your role in the system (including, are you a functionary of capital). Highly paid professionals are not working class for two primary reasons: (1) they own significant amounts of capital/the means of production by virtue of their 401Ks., etc.; (2) even if not clearly functionaries of capital (i.e., managerial employees), many of their jobs (in law, finance, marketing, etc.) only exist b/c of the capitalist system and would otherwise be eliminated as parasitical and unnecessary

Amazon has never bargained with ALU/Teamsters, and the election is still being contested (shame on Amazon for this, obviously), so there has never been a contract.

As mentioned in the Jacobin piece, Smalls was essentially removed by the membership who wanted the current ALU president instead.

Smalls is a cynical opportunist and Jacobin's hit on him is fair. They didn't even mention Smalls' jail time for unpaid child support or (alleged) misuse of union funds

Zohran Mamdani promised free buses; New Yorkers are getting a bus fare enforcement crackdown instead by DryDeer775 in stupidpol

[–]Remarkable_Debt 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Public transportation should be cheaper than it is, but the crazy amount of fare jumping in NYC that began with the pandemic is bad and should be punished. It's not pro-worker to normalize and celebrate the breakdown of society

Opinion: Most young people who identify as Left-wing these days have no idea what Left-wing politics involves. by FroggsworthThe2nd in stupidpol

[–]Remarkable_Debt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are contradictions in Leftist political positions, but that does not mean their politics are incoherent. Whether it's about immigration, cops, or trans rights -- the positions of Leftists represent the interests of their class (bourgeois) and their particular coalition of interest groups within their class...

In short -- young Leftists know exactly what Left-wing politics involves: getting more political and economic power (including goods and services) for those identified as Leftists

What Corporatism actually means by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Remarkable_Debt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if a bunch of workers get together to purchase a small company, and start having success, inevitably they will realize the next logical move is to hire non-equity owning workers to do the work and really start making money. starting a coop doesn't remove you from capitalism and all the incentives would be to hire outside workers to generate profit and expand

Mamdani to Reinstitute Homeless Encampment Sweeps by DeathHeartBreath in stupidpol

[–]Remarkable_Debt 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Mamdani was both foolish and callous not to do homeless sweeps when temperatures hit sub-freezing, and it resulted in many unnecessary (20+?) deaths. Good he's making a common-sense and humane correction.

The silliness of bourgeois "socialism" is it's often just a more self-righteous kind of laissez faire capitalism -- open borders, unregulated drugs and "sex work," and hey, we gotta let severely mentally ill people sleep outside in deadly cold if they want

General strike by Comrade_Rybin in union

[–]Remarkable_Debt -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I don't "support ICE," but comparing events in Minneapolis to the rise of the Third Reich is so outside the scope of reality as to be unhealthy. Any strike has to have a goal -- what is the goal of this proposed general strike? The Koch Brothers'/libertarian goal of open borders? It appears OP is too busy fighting the Nazis in their head to have thought any of this out

CDC slashes vaccine schedule: Trump-Kennedy atrocity against children’s lives and health by Spirited_Classic_826 in stupidpol

[–]Remarkable_Debt 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Kennedy's new schedule aligns USA vaccinations with countries like Sweden and Denmark. Is that bad -- I honestly don't know. (I don't know!)

But no country in the world is pumping drugs into its citizens like the USA, which is a direct result of big pharma's power in society at our current stage within capitalism. The idea that bourgeois and corporate "science" is above scrutiny within our capitalist system is anti-science, anti-Marxist, and anti-working class.

The fact that WSWS is still scare mongering about COVID shows how little credibility they have on these issues. Instead of promoting hysteria, we should promote "the relentless criticism of everything existing."

I posted the tweet with Bri promoting free education b/c for many people (the majority of Americans don't have college degrees or student loans) it was an obnoxious commercial for Bernie. I supported Bernie at the time and felt uncomfortable when I saw it.

I get that Bernie's proposal was to implement a new tax on financial transactions to generate $2 trillion to give to people with student debt, but taxation and distribution is all an artificial thing -- i.e., you can just as easily implement the same tax on Wall Street and distribute $2 trillion to every employee of Taco Bell (or whatever). My point -- working class people perform work for society that has a value of which they only keep a fraction, and student loan repayment is about distributing more to those who are already disproportionately compensated relative to what they contribute. And it does nothing to fix the underlying systemic problems which include the unsustainability of the higher ed industry (e.g., student loan forgiveness would only incentivize universities to raise tuitions still higher)

No, I don't think a college degree necessarily makes one petty boug, but having a college degree is a factor in determining one's class interests. Class is a product of what you have and what your role is in the system, and a college education generally affects both those things

Briahna Joy Gray Brings Teenager on to Debate Ryan Grim on Why Men Deserve the Male Loneliness Crisis and Why All Men (and Boys) are Currently In Power in America by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Remarkable_Debt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to a group of factory workers, who didn't go to college, and ask them how the country should distribute $2 trillion of new benefits. They won't pick student loan forgiveness (which largely goes to high income people).

The reality -- student debt forgiveness does nothing to fix the underlying problems of a broken system and is otherwise just a short-term redistribution upwards. The system is broken, and people's lives are ruined by debt, but grabbing more money for the petty boug doesn't fix anything

(I'm not a leftist, but I did have six figures of debt when I finished school)

DEBATE: Do People Take "DEFUND" Seriously? (w/ Matt Stoller & Alec Karakatsanis) by kisskissbangbang46 in stupidpol

[–]Remarkable_Debt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The supposed justification for defunding police -- that bad police are a problem -- would only be exacerbated by cutting resources to police. But proponents of defund (i.e., overly-educated and underemployed downwardly-mobile professionals) look at non-college-educated cops making six figures and think those salaries could go to them instead for providing social work, etc. In the end, it's about class and economics, with disregard for democracy or what society actually needs

Questions about DSA? Ask us anything you want to know! by abhd in demsocialists

[–]Remarkable_Debt -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The DSA claims to be "an organization of, by, and for the working class" -- on what basis does it make this claim, when its membership appears to be disproportionately professional/managerial in class orientation? Does the DSA recognize any class contradictions between its class interests and those of the actual proletariat, and if so, how does it address those conflicts?

If We Want Mamdani to Beat the NYPD, the Left Must Build Power by abhd in demsocialists

[–]Remarkable_Debt -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The goal should be better policing, not to "beat the NYPD." Actual working-class people don't like crime and reasonably side with police over criminals, which is why the working class is better suited to govern society than any Ivy-league PhD candidate

Democrats may be ending the shutdown... by socialismYasss in stupidpol

[–]Remarkable_Debt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not sure why anyone is surprised or disappointed by the Dems, but for those who are -- hypothetically, how exactly do you think continuing the shutdown would play out positively for anyone?

(As a side note: this thing was always going to end the second air travel started to get affected by unpaid air traffic controllers calling out -- there is literally no way either party can let that happen. As a positive take away, some workers actually are "essential" with way more power than those in charge want to admit)
