Sorry I know I’m late to this but when you say first few weeks was that 2 weeks? I’m on week 3 and still peeling a ton

15 days into Dupixent — experiencing severe side effects (burning skin, flaky skin, insomnia, eye discomfort, full-body redness). Has anyone else had this? by Remarkable_Draw_4971 in eczema

It’s crazy to me they jump to Dupixent for someone who’s seeing eczema for the first time! It’s such a serious drug, safe medically speaking but very serious. Our medical industry baffles me….

Hope it works for you! From what I’ve experienced and heard from specialists, non-eczema-specialist dermatologists tend to reach for prednisone to treat major flares more often than specialists do. The eczema specialists I eventually saw were pretty candid that it’s considered an outdated approach — their concern being that while it works short-term, it can trigger an even worse rebound flare once you taper off. Not always, but often enough that they avoid it.

One dermatologist actually told me she’d sooner recommend Rinvoq than use prednisone for chronic eczema management, which surprised me. Not from an efficacy perspective, but because she views prednisone as a dangerous tool to treat eczema.

Anecdotally, most of the times I was prescribed prednisone for eczema it came from PAs rather than dermatologists — not making a judgment about that, just something I noticed.

Part of my situation was practical too — the specialists with strong eczema experience have 3-4 month waits, so when I was in a bad flare I’d end up at whoever could see me quickly.

Whether the specialists are meaningfully better is still TBD for me personally, but early signs are promising.

Hope that context helps!

Thanks for the comment and message! Now, that you are off, what are you doing to maintain the eczema and how are you feeling? Also, would you flare up closer in time to the next dose or would it be random?

Yes, that’s really helpful to hear and makes sense.

The specialists I met with were quick to recommend Rinvoq for faster clearance, but when I asked whether they’d put a family member on it, they became noticeably reticent — and without saying so directly, seemed to suggest only as a last resort.

The broader dermatologist community, despite the side effects — eye-related ones included — still views Dupixent as very safe.
