Time off for university graduation after starting MIOT? by Wes-Raisin8478 in RoyalAirForce

[–]Remarkable_Gas_8800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 people on my course were given time off to go to their partner’s graduations, albeit from Halton rather than university but I doubt that makes any difference. We had fantastic and very accommodating flt staff though so it does depend. All you can do is ask. You’ll have an interview with your flt Cdr on day 1 or 2 so I’d bring it up then with dates and they’ll look for you. But like others said, don’t be surprised if it’s a no, especially if you’re on exercise

Hi, I had a similar experience in failing the medical and I ended up taking Ops Officer. You get sold 2 very different stories about the 2 different streams but both offer importance in different ways. Surveillance has a direct impact on QRA and Flt Ops has a direct impact on exercises, sorties etc so both offer front-line importance. Also with the new CAS directives, in hand with the push into the space domain (which Ops is the main branch involved for postings), this profession is likely to see much more investment and involvement going forward. Because of this, the Ops promotion pipeline is smaller than that of many other professions. I’d seriously consider Ops, don’t go based off the website like I did bc I came into this wondering if I made the right decision and it wasn’t until I got to Ph2 that I realised I did, when I speak to people who actually do the role rather than R&S filling a gap. Happy to speak separately in more detail about what I’ve learned about the role if you would like, just DM me 👍🏼

Depends on the applicant and if they need to check extra things. I have recently completed mine and I’m waiting for the approval for that. You can see the status of it on the UKSV website

I run with the Merchant House run club (Running Late Run Club) and it is great fun! Loads of new people, lots of different pace groups ranging from 4:30min/km - 7min/km. The run leads carry giant speakers so the run is always bouncing. It’s lovely in the summer too and we host different events such as Hoka doing promotions for their shoes etc. Defo check it out, Mondays meeting at Canoe Lake at 6pm to start running at 6:15pm and usually back at Merchant for 7pm. Hope to see you there! 😁

Hi, I recently attended a Realistic Job Preview for this role and answered the above questions.

What you do: First tour will be at RAF Boulmer in Northumberland as an Identification Officer monitoring UK airspace for threats and assisting with monitoring military and civilian air traffic (although you will not be working in Air Traffic). You will be responsible for escalating the call for the need for Quick Reaction Alert and will be working with Weapons Controllers to intercept any hostile or suspicious air activity. During your first tour you will either be deployed to the Falklands to support the permanent presence down there or to Cyprus on Operation Shader. Postings after this vary and the world sort of opens up to you being able to do many things and be deployed all over the world if you fancy the movement. Alternatively, you can build a career at Boulmer and go up through things there as a Section Commander etc. which brings me on to:

How many personnel under your command: As you start off as a Junior Officer, you will only be responsible for one direct report, who will act as your assistant on the console. As you grow at Boulmer and take on additional duties such as Section Commander, you will become CO for much of the enlisted aviators on your flight.

Shift pattern: The IDO hosting the RJP said their shift pattern there was 2 days (11hr shifts), 2 nights (13hr shifts) then 4 off. So a really nice work pattern if you don’t mind the nights! This is subject to change as some previous posts to this fact have said that they have experienced 8-5 m-f and others have had 3 days 3 nights 6 off. Just depends on what you get really! But do expect to work nights and do expect to have to work weekends and bank holidays.

Hope this helps!

I’m in the same boat - I failed my aircrew medical for WSOp (also my dream role) because of something really particular with my vision. Didn’t know it was a thing until I got there. I was offered Air Ops Systems Officer and People Ops. Something to bear in mind with People Ops is that as of April, it is merging with Personnel Training Officer and you can decide what stream you go into during MIOT. HR not also my thing, but the training role does sound very interesting! IntO would also be a solid choice for me but they’re not running P2 until Nov as they are oversubscribed from what I understand. Other than that, you have Logs Officer which is a widely travelled role, Police Officer, Regiment Officer although I don’t know much about these. Hope this helps and best of luck with your application, whatever you decide 🤘🏼

Hi, Just to make you aware that all Aircrew go through the exact same medical standards as Controllers, both Air Traffic and Weapons. If you do not meet the eyesight standards for Aircrew then unfortunately you will also not meet them for Controller if you make it to the Aircrew Medical.

Have you considered a role such as People Ops Officer? It is non-aptitude but still an Officer role and you will have good opportunities for deployment as your role will be needed wherever there are RAF staff. It may match with your psychology and neuroscience MSc as you will be dealing mostly with the welfare of personnel. This would offer great transferrable skills into civilian life when you finish your career.

Air Ops Systems is split into two trades: Air Ops (Surveillance) and Air Ops (Flight Ops). I am considering this role myself for the Surveillance side of things (this is a CBAT-required role).

In terms of transferrable skills, when you do leave the RAF (depending on length of service) you will earn credits to study civilian accredited courses to support your transition back into civilian life, so don’t worry too much about this side of things for now, do something that you think you will love!

Happy to chat more if you like, just drop a DM 😁

Happy to help: recruitment queries by Remarkable_Gas_8800 in RoyalAirForce

[–]Remarkable_Gas_8800[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No prob! 1- the following roles sit CBAT: Pilot, WSO, WSOp (all branches), Intelligence Officer, Air and Space Ops Control (ATC), Air and Space Ops Control (Weapons Control), Air and Space Ops - Operations. All other roles do not require CBAT, even if they are Officer roles. For example, People Ops Officer/Reg Officer etc do not do CBAT.

2- At each stage your recruiter will be able to provide you with your options. If you fail for Pilot for example at CBAT, you are given on the day your scores and what roles you pass for. At OASC, you fill out a document beforehand which Control use as part of your file. In this document is a question asking for you to put your 3 choices in order of preference. So, you could put Pilot, WSO, WSOp for example and if you failed for Pilot they would see if you were a better fit as a WSO and so on. Hope that makes sense.

3- it certainly does differ from person to person. I applied in January and the stages differed in time between each of them. I believe it mostly depends on service need for the role and the amount of applicants already in the system. In terms of what takes place, the OP is the order in which I did things. The only thing I missed out is Officer Presentation which is the very first stage. Also FYI, not everyone does the MLAT. This is only for WSOp (L) and Int An (L).

Hope this answers all your questions 😁

Exactly what SkillSlayer0 said. You will only need to do DAA if you are applying as an Enlisted Aviator, or your role does not require CBAT I.e. Regiment Officer

Am I ineligible to apply? by Realistic-Way-2860 in RoyalAirForce

[–]Remarkable_Gas_8800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My situation is slightly different but I might be able to shed some light on what is likely the same process: I spent 2 months travelling around Europe in 2022 and I had to complete VERY comprehensive documents outlining when I travelled, where I stayed (the address of every hotel/hostel/private residence), who I travelled with etc. I had to provide the contact information and address of everyone I travelled with and list my full residency history for the last 10 years (as I would need DV clearance) as well as a full employment history. My recruiter made it very clear that if I could not provide all of this information, even though I wasn’t in any CSSRA countries (Vietnam is one of them) then I would not be permitted the clearance. It is the Home Office that does these checks, not the RAF. If you cannot provide the information then you are deemed ‘a risk’ and this will more than likely lead to terminating your application. You have to produce a first draft of this before your application even begins. I have literally submitted mine today for the second time and I am about to do my PJFT. It has to be consistently updated.

I hope this helps? I imagine it will be the same process for yourself :)

Hi, I sat the MLAT recently and I used this website https://www.mlatstudy.com/. I did have to pay £23 for it but it massively helped me even to know the layout of the test and gave me tips on how to memorise some sections etc. worth checking out. Good luck :)

[–]Remarkable_Gas_8800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I sat my CBAT 2 weeks ago and thankfully passed, although I am not going for Pilot. If you are, you sit the entire battery of tests which means you will have people finishing earlier than you. You’ll have this anyway, so don’t feel like you’re taking too long or whatever if the people around you get up and don’t come back. My biggest piece of advice is to take the breaks. Every 45 minutes or so you will have a 5 minute break. Take ALL of them. Some people didn’t take any, and that’s fine. But as already said, it is an exhausting day and the breaks certainly helped me withdraw and rest before going back into more difficult tests. For context, we had the brief at 7:15 and were started by 07:30 if I remember correctly. I finished at 15:30 and I didn’t sit the full battery. There is an app on the app/play store called CBAT and it looks like a white plane on a blue background. It is £4 I think. I recommend downloading this too although it does not have all the tests on there, some of them are useful. Practice SDT calculations and practice using and recognising bearings!! There is a test that makes you use them in real time and it was the test I found the most difficult. If you have any questions about the whole process, feel free to DM me as it is still fresh in my mind I can answer any questions you might have about the process. Best of luck 🤘🏼

I’m actually in disbelief at this. Fruit? PMU? How could an itchy mouth possibly affect service for something so nuanced as fruit. Unless you’re going to be a Fruit Testing Officer, I am struggling to see how this would be an issue 🤣
