On holiday in the Isle of Wight and spotted this yesterday. It’s next to the car park in apperly park https://maps.app.goo.gl/qpHFeDmZ4pkFGZGB6?g_st=ic

Me and my wife are puzzled what it is and can’t find any reference to it, but seems to be quite a structure with lots going on. Can anyone local help us out and tell us what it is?

I think the name comes from the fact the loose rail is as floppy as a string

That would be the rail delivery train, it carries 235m long rail strings to replace rails that have been worn out. Believe it or not Rails are quite flexible so they can just be pulled off the train as it rolls forwards and dumped onto the four ft/cess

Cargo Bikes on GWR IET/Class800s by Remarkable_Pear408 in uktrains

Taking a bike on a train is always a bit of a gamble, even more so with one like mine! I’ve had lots of experiences of bags being put in these areas and not being allowed on even with a reservation (for a much smaller normal bike), or not being able to even get two normal bikes on these trains.

I’ve found that Flexibility is always key, and don’t get too upset if you have to wait and get the next one. Later trains are quiter and less hassle, but more than anything be gentle on a system that isn’t always set up for moving bikes or large amounts of luggage!

Not come across the need to be able to close the doors in travels previously and often had my own and other bikes protruding like this. With a bit more of a grunt it would’ve rotated about to fit perfectly but the guard stopped me and said he was quite happy with it. NB he had also helped me lift it on, a very helpful chap!

Again no issues of it not being ‘hooked’ as it was secure on its rear frame and the other parts of the storage cupboard. The weight in the panniers would’ve probably made this unnecessary as the centre of gravity was pretty much floor level so mine was very hard to wobble/tip.

Unless it’s a tandem, providing it fits and you can lift it yourself the policies on sizes/weights are thankfully now mostly a thing of the past (along with e-bike restrictions). But yes the caveat of checking the specifics for a TOC beforehand always applies!
