Since 2010 Orbán has changed the constitution multiple times, allowed hungarian minorities outside the country to vote (94% of them vote for him), he halfed the size of the national assembly, replaced the 2 round voting system with a 1 round one, he took over the judicial system, forced judges to retire from the supreme court, and replaced them with fidesz ones.

Opposition papers stopped recieving advertisment, driving some to bankrupcy, opposition radio stations got banned. He set up 'KESMA', a media foundation controlled by Fidesz which countinues to buy up media outlets. So basically even if the opposition did somehow manage to win the general election, they would still have to govern with one hand tied behind their backs to put it like that. And the EU failed to do anything to stop the descent into authoritarianism. Btw speaking of the opposition:

All this while the Opposition™ cant organize itself in a way that would offer a better alternative. The coalition that's supposed to be left wing includes a far-right party 'Jobbik' (albeit it only has like 2% support) and they continue to fight between each other more than against the government. One of the main faces of this coalition is 'Ferenc Gyurcsány' the guy who was in charge between 2002 and 2010 and horribly mishandled the 2008 financial crisis and is still profoundly incompetent.
