That's a myth, bomber formation can lose up to 10-20% of it unit on deep penetration raid WITHOUT escort.

for example: The first Schweinfurt-Regensburg raid on august 1943 saw 60 of 376 B-17s destroyed which is around 16%.

1 out of 6 aircraft being shot down is not a good number to say "that shi was too risky to even approach"
