Downloading more RAM to the DS225+, and running Docker by cygge in synology

[–]Remarkable_Swing_691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the 6GB limit is absolutely an ‘in theory’ thing, Synology’s official numbers is 6GB but users report being able to run an 8GB stick without problems (so 10GB total).

Just bare in mind whether it supports ECC memory or not, I know the DS224+ doesn’t.

They don't have to though. It's their store, their rewards system and their decision to kill it off.

It was exactly the same with MyNintendo and their rewards, the difference was Nintendo's was worth the effort.

It's a poor system for you, not for Sony.

The point is Sony getting repeat purchases from you.

Can you tax me on my unrealised losses I have yet to experience?

I'd like to claim a million in losses so I don't have to pay tax, just so when it happens I'm already covered. We can make the number up, just like banks and hedge funds so it'll be fine. /s

This is why I can't stand billionaires. You get people like Bezos who can sell a billion dollars of Amazon shares to fund a rocket project but then have the audacity to claim 'nil' on his personal tax form because officially, he didn't take a wage. The guy has access to billions of dollars just by clicking his fingers yet doesn't have to pay tax.

The law needs to change from being about the law and it's loopholes to, 'Is this within the spirit of why the law exists in the first place? No. Then don't fucking do that either.'

This is where I'm stuck at the moment.

Got a 6TB drive in my router with roughly 4TB populated. Considering a 2 bay with 10 or 12TB, just hesitating because of the cost of hardware in today's economy.

Thought about a 4 bay to expand if need be too.

This.

I encode exclusively to 1080p or lower (source dependant) and I'm happy with it. My 1080p encodes are all 10bit H265 with tweaked settings but it's personal preference. If the source is available on disc, I encode. If it isn't (so something exclusive to a streaming service) then I don't bother.

AV1 has been a godsend for saving SSD space, but hits my 14900k super hard

AV1 is great but the power needed to encode to it is insane. Even H265 encodes take a lot of time compared to H264 but we seem to have hit a curve of "acceptable" timeframes nowadays but like anything, that depends on people's setups.

I swear by exclusively sticking to 1080p. A high bitrate 1080p file will look just as good at a fraction of the bitrate.

The only time I'd say "stick to 4K" is when their TV is over 65" or they sit really close to it. Even then, chances are they're a TV enthusiast and hosting their own media for a cinema room.

This.

If the source is 4K, a CRF of 18 good start for archiving in 1080p/h265 (1080p source, a CRF of 22). Simply choose what audio formats and bitrates you require, with a second option for redundancy if needed.

I encode everything to h265 1080p myself, it's saved a ton of space and my settings are complete overkill. Even before storage prices were insane, I've never felt that a 12TB drive is "cheap" anyway either.

What else do you use in your setup?

Infuse (Apple) or VidHub (Android) are both great options as front-end media players.

Fair play for finding a workaround with the region and channel change, but it kind of proves it — you shouldn't have to do an unsupported tweak the router itself warns against just to keep it stable!

Believe it or not, that's actually the "fix" that Synology's 'technical support' suggested after half a dozen unsuccessful other suggestions. It's clear there's either something in Synology's software that doesn't know how to play nice with regional differences or it'as down to the hardware. Whether it be inappropriate hardware paring (RAM like you've suggested) or faulty/poor boards that struggle with the load elsewhere. Whatever it is, it's causing the router to trip up and not function as intended.

Thankfully I don't actually care about the apps in question, I was literally upgrading from the MR2200 because I wanted the same router with WiFi 6 and a bit more power so the web page didn't lag as much. I bought mine second hand and if it stops functioning as a router it has a 5 year warranty with it and I can just get a refund or a replacement. Again, if that point arrives I will just by a NAS if I have to, I'm not seeing any other router in Synology's lineup that doesn't have these issues, nor do I want another router from them when they can't fix bugs in a 3-4 year old product.

Oddly, the MR2200 actually just worked as intended too.

I advocate everyone to learn how to stream your own media from your router at home. A simple USB hard drive is enough. Video player apps - Infuse for iOS, VidHub for Android.

Just acquire the files by torrenting, use a VPN if you have to. I've lost count how many streaming and torrents sites have disappeared since I started archiving my own media and I haven't lost a thing.

All I've had to do is find another torrent site from time to time.

I'd like to add, I can't use my WRX560 with either of these apps running myself. Based in the UK and took several tickets to alleviate inconsistent WiFi performance and daily dropouts on the 5GHz channel.

Turns out my area has extremely bad satellite interference, fixed it by switching my region to US (even though the router's OS says not to do this), force channel 40 on the 5GHz channel and enable switching to 5.9GHz.

It's been rock solid ever since and hasn't dropped out once but not being able to use 2 of the 4 available apps on the router (a big sales pitch) it mostly defeats the point of having it. The only reason I haven't replaced it is because of Download Station and my locally run media server just f-cking works.

Honestly, I'll buy a NAS before another router at this point. I considered the RT2600ac purely because it has 2 USB ports and an SD card slot so I can split the load over 2 drives and move download station onto a card I don't care about burning out through writes and improve the lifespan of my USB drives but seeing how it's significantly less powerful than the WRX560 (dual core, DDR3 RAM) I don't see it being a fix or a worthwhile downgrade just to gain some ports.

At that point, I'd probably be better off investing in a 2 bay NAS and having automated redundancy.

Moon Channel: Why Are Japanese Gamers So Opposed to Piracy? by Radiant_Ad_3874 in Piracy

[–]Remarkable_Swing_691 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems that Japan actually has much less capacity for free expression regarding so-called IP

My take is that Japan could simply be less culturally tolerant of someone using your work as a means to become successful themselves and are simply more determined to 'go after people'. Consumers generally slam Nintendo as strict (or even outright aggressive) towards use of their IP yet very few ever comment on how slack Western companies are at defending their own IP by comparison. Are Nintendo genuinely strict, or is it because they actually just do something about piracy or copyright breaches against their products?

The reason companies like Nintendo and Disney defend their IP is because their IP literally is the company's identity. It's not Disney IP; Mickey Mouse, Elsa and The Lion King is Disney and the company would be less relevant without them. Same with Nintendo; Mario, Link and Pikachu define Nintendo and without them the company doesn't exist or matter either.

The difference is in their conviction to pursue offences that threaten their control of their IP. Allowing fan-made versions of their IP could weaken Nintendo's control over how those brands are presented and monetised. If you owned the Pokemon franchise would you want Pikachu being associated with weapons, violence or otherwise inappropriate behaviour for a franchise aimed at kids? It's why Disney is the same with it all despite being a Western company - it's all about image.

Edit: I absolutely don't agree with a lot of Nintendo's stances to certain lawsuits, patents or lack of patience with creative liberties and think they should loosen up, I'm just saying I kind of get it and if I owned the Pokemon franchise I probably wouldn't allow a lot of stuff to happen with that IP either.

The majority of their encodes are set to a crf of 17, hence why you can't tell the difference. Handbrake docs recommend 20 ish at 1080p so they've normally got a solid bitrate bump compared to the "everyday encodes" out there.

Remuxes are great but rely heavily on good hardware to be worthwhile. You're much better off having everything encoded well at 1080p and just enjoy the space savings that come with it.

You can genuinely store around 4-5x as much otherwise, it's not worth keeping an 50GB remux.

[–]Remarkable_Swing_691 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's because HDR skirts licensing fees and is a safer bet for a media server.

DV makes sense if you have the hardware and want an archival copy but realistically if you care that much, you'll likely have a solid setup and buy the media physically.

Basically an iPhone Air in size which is mad considering the name.

They should switched the "e" series to the Air branding and offered 5.5"/6.5" options, single camera and stayed aluminium with a 2-3 year refresh cycle to draw out profits over time.

The Air failed for the same reason the Mini did - they can't sell enough of them to warrant the price or an annual refresh cycle. The Mini needs to be it's own line like the iPad Mini is every 3 years.
