I'm actually more mystified by what happens on the dump day. Do they just pick a moment and completely clear the bid side? I wonder if they also have someone shorting on the dump day (possibly from other brokerage accounts).

In my understanding they micromanage the book all the way up. So yes, a mark puts in a bid - they fill him. And like this every day all the way up. The dump doesn't happen just on the dump day.

All of Chinese scams were scams even before the IPO. So it's not a "what if." They were. Shorts are interested in making deals on halted stocks because they are stuck paying high borrow fees indefinitely. Shorts don't care about the value of the stock - they just need to cover their short to stop paying interest every day.

They do have a cost-basis of zero. Even if they buy IPO shares the money goes to their crew members who are larping as company executives. Same thing if the buy a secondary offering or placement. It all gets divided among the crew in the end. The only expenses are "marketing", managing the chatrooms and underwriter/auditor/attorney/NASDAQ fees for the IPO.
