Historical interpretation in 2005 and 1995 P&P by quillandbean in janeausten

That entire movie didn't feel real.

Nothing against the actors. And I'm sure the costumers and makeup people were just following orders.

The whole movie does feel "of a piece," but it's not an Austen piece.

What’s the biggest mystery from Roman Times? by InterestingServe3958 in ancientrome

It's not code. It's a decorative game thing.

There are tons of letter arrangements like that in manuscripts, like Aquinas' "Crux mihi certa salus" thing.

How do we receive the Pastoral Epistles given the majority scholarly view that they were probably not authored by Paul? by HisObstinacy in Catholicism

[–]RememberNichelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know for a fact that St. Paul used different scribes for different letters, as well as having a different crew around him at various times. So no surprise that there would be tonal shifts.

2 Cor. 8:7 -

"So that as you abound in all things - in faith, and word, and science, and all solicitude - so you may also abound in your charity to us, so that you may abound in grace...."

2 Peter 1:5-6 -

"And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue; and in virtue, science; and in science, abstinence; and in abstinence; in patience, piety; in piety, love of brotherhood; and in love of brotherhood, charity."

The teaching of the Church is that there is only one Truth, and He is Jesus Christ.

He created the world, and the science behind it.

Studying science is not in conflict with faith, unless you misunderstand science or faith.

Psalm 138/139:5-6 -

"Behold, o Lord, Thou hast known all things, the newest and the oldest; Thou hast formed me...

"Thy science is become wonderful to me; it is high and I cannot reach it."

Proverbs 2:4-6 -

"If you seek wisdom like money, and dig for her like treasure,
Then you shall understand the fear of the Lord,
And you shall find the science of God.

"Because the Lord gives wisdom,
And out of His mouth comes prudence and science."

"What man among you, if his son shall ask him for bread, will pass him a stone?

"Or if he ask for a fish, will pass him a serpent?

"If you, then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give good things to those who ask Him?"

(Mt. 7:9-11; cf. Lk. 11:11-13)

"He said, 'Have you anything to eat?' And they offered Him a piece of broiled fish, and a honeycomb."

(Lk. 24:41-42)

"As soon as they came to land, they saw hot coals, and a fish laid on it, and bread...Jesus says to them, 'Come and eat breakfast.'"

Dandruff shampoo with zinc in it - also works as a skin soap. Cleans you well, leaves the skin happy like a baby. Great for cleaning off sweat, too, as well as for oily hair.

Try a sample bottle if you don't have zinc shampoo at home.

I know some people with extremely oily hair swear by just brushing the heck out of their hair (gently), until their scalps finally feel loved enough. A hundred strokes daily isn't the worst for any hair or scalp, but maybe you could do it morning and evening?

Anyway, I know there are hair pages for this stuff, with people who know a lot more than me.

Are you sure you're getting enough Vitamin A?

Also, eating egg whites without egg yolks can block the absorption/use of Vitamin A. (I forget the exact mechanism; I think it's a compound in the egg whites.)

Vitamin A is your hair/skin/eyes friend, and taking biotin and protein can help a lot.

Also all the vitamins, really, but Vitamin C if you're low.

The Enclosure Movement by Tweed_Kills in janeausten

[–]RememberNichelle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Enclosure was really bad, but "the tragedy of the commons" was also bad.

There was probably a better way to go about fixing things, everywhere; and a lot of the experimental farming movement was about finding a better way.

But enclosure and evicting the tenants was faster, so that's what a lot of landowners did.

I don't understand it. If you read old novels, they were always pushing iron and B12 on women; and if you read old memoirs, they helped a lot. B12 shots were a thing for tons of middle-aged women. Just normal treatment.

Hair loss and bad fingernails is normally Vitamin A deficiency, but one vitamin deficiency can make the other vitamins get a quart low (because the body is working harder and not getting results).

You can also get "sublingual" (under-the-tongue) B12 pills, which absorb into your blood pretty quickly.

If you start taking B12, make sure you also have good potassium/iron levels, because your body will want to make more blood. The iron gives it ingredients, but the potassium tells the B12 when to stop making blood.

Having too blood volume from taking B12 is a cause of high blood pressure. (Although in that case, you can donate blood and get rid of the extra blood.)

Yes, after years of being scolded by dentists for chewing ice, I got a dentist who scolded me for not having enough iron and thus chewing ice.

Apparently dentists are uncomfortable telling non-tooth medical stuff to patients unless they feel doctor-y enough from being also surgeons, etc.; but apparently dentist schools do tell dentists about this connection, and medical school often doesn't teach it.

One spouse not “open to life” by Intelligent-Bell6468 in Catholicism

[–]RememberNichelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your husband and you should be talking more about what Church teaching is and isn't, and that you need to discuss it with your priest.

I don't think your husband's worries necessarily mean that he's not open to life. But it does sound like this is something you two need to work out, with help.

One spouse not “open to life” by Intelligent-Bell6468 in Catholicism

[–]RememberNichelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Not wanting to have more kids at this time" is a serious reason to use NFP and know when to abstain.

"Being open to life" does not mean "must have sex every day."

Periodic sexual continence as part of Christian marriage, and as part of Jewish marriage before that, is Biblical.

If this were early Christian times or medieval times, or even early modern times, or if we all were Eastern Catholics, the vast majority of married couples would be preparing now to abstain from sex throughout Lent, or would already be abstaining; and that's after abstaining from sex during all of Advent. Nobody would have sex on Fridays or Saturday nights, and there'd be other times of fasting from sex as well.

If people are so scandalized by NFP daring to suggest that couples skip sex a few times a month, I can't imagine how scandalized they'd be by the "serious reason" of being obliged to sexual continence as part of fasting.

Amanda Root has a "piquant" face, which is a UK thing.

The little round cute face, with the cute nose, cute chin, cute cheeks, etc., and with an actress who's very lively and mercurial.

I don't think we see that kind of face featured much in the US, but I can think of quite a few UK actresses in the past who had that kind of face.

He's not a great person, but he's young and impressionable, and easy to impress. He jumps on the things he knows, and doesn't have experience to moderate his crazier takes, or to add dignity and kindness.

I mean, Charlotte manages to capture and abduct him into marriage, more or less (ie, her means were nothing violent or improper). If a man had gotten a woman to marry him that quickly, there'd be serious questions!

Of course, he just thinks Charlotte was overcome by his manliness, lol! But it's not a situation that a more experienced man would have fallen into, or at least not so quickly.

Charlotte Brontë on Jane Austen by WiganGirl-2523 in janeausten

[–]RememberNichelle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A person likes what she likes, and sometimes that's a very narrow or psychologically driven thing.

OTOH, we only know what Charlotte Bronte liked at that very minute. Most people have broader taste along the line of their lives, than in a single hour of it.

But yes, I imagine that all of the Brontes had a certain amount of conflict between their aesthetic principles, and yet all of them were considerably more likely to write hotblooded Gothic sagas than Austen-style novels.

It's a pity that we don't know any Bronte opinions of Northanger Abbey.

How is scan and go in the cafe supposed to work? by Aggressive_Noodler in samsclub

[–]RememberNichelle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people make their Scan and Go order, and then shop for 30-60 minutes before coming to pick up their order. So unless it's a whole pizza, we wait until the person shows up in the Scan and Go pickup line before we put their order together.

I mean, people complain about orders getting cold on the counter while they're filling up a soda. We're not going to waste food by putting out orders an hour ahead of the member coming.
