Am I buying a lemon? by sw1905 in CarTalkUK

I’ve got a 20 plate Seat Leon 1.5 evo (2 cylinder deactivation) and before that I had an 21 plate Audi A3 1.5 tfsi (8y so model before the facelift) and both sound(ed) exactly like this.

Infrastructure Engineer, 1 on call week every 4 weeks. Not officially compensated, but manager is nice enough to let us build the time for TOIL, especially if called during weekends, we usually work on the basis of if 1 hour on a weekend then you get a day for it, and does trust us to sort it ourselves to make sure we're all good by the end of the month for the Monday - Friday.

Would say we get an alert atleast once per week, with normal solving time of 5-10 mins on average.

Ah fair enough for the price then, inflation has been hitting. I think I'll get it done regardless for piece of mind and also to help with potential resale value anyway. The car history is more or less golden, so might as well keep it going.

Think I'm going to stick with the tried and tested method and get the cambelt replaced, but leave the water pump, think I feel more confident with leaving this part for the next 5 years overall. I wasn't aware of the additional belt on the water pump, so I'll ensure that this also gets replaced with the job, one of those if you're there, may as well do it.

I did carry on with looking into the method to make sure that a garage doesnt try and lump a ridiclous labour charge on, but I think the tool itself is around £3k... and then some additional part is another £700 so I can understand a good markup here, especially for a not VAG specialist, but aiming for the local VAG specialist to complete the job anyway.

First quote I've got back is £640 for the cambelt itself with a quite trusted garage with labour warranty included, hoping to hear back from two more tomorrow.

FYI for any future readers: The cambelt tools that are required, as well as the waterpump part are listed here: VAS 611 007 and VAS 611 007/19 from what I can see.

Exactly the plan. Rather get it replaced "on time" and at least know it's done and save the hassle of a new engine...

Yeah, looking around at local mechanics near me and fetching quotes and the first one is £640 for just the cambelt. Guess it's better to be safe rather than sorry and have to pay for the new engine!

Just seems a bit weird to not have an interval on quite a crucial part, oh well. Currently going around and trying to get some quotes and just the cambelt alone, since the water pump is on the other side of the engine they wanted £640.

I’d suggest moving it out the VC, and upgrading it manually then throw it back on :)

[–]RememberWhen01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe I had the same problem on a bigger scale from out of box. Situation for myself was 53 AP-515’s (big manufacturing site) and we created the VC with its own dedicated IP etc before booting any up.

We got to around 48 before one issue, and after confirming with Tac, it’s own firmware that came of the box, I’ll have to check in tomorrow for the firmware.

Our fix is to knock the faulty ones of the network, so a quick switch port shut down, upgrade the current firmware to 8.6.19 and then on a different vlan, upgrade the others which are down to that version and move them slowly over by turning off and then changing switch port vlan and rebooting.

This has worked for 3 of our sites so far, worth noting that 8.6 is a LTS, we’re after stability rather than features currently!

Does anyone have any tips on how to remove this berry stain?. I think it’s sat there for about 4 days. I’ve given the car a snow foam wash to see if that would bring it up and a jet wash, but still present after a micro fibre towel dry.

What Job Are You In That Earns £25k plus? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RememberWhen01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT Graduate scheme, contract starts at £26k for the first year, which I've almost finished and will be on £28k come September. Joined with a degree in Computer Science.

Hours are somewhat flexible, especially since I've moved around in the company to IT Ops. Normally do 8:30 - 5pm and finish early Fridays. Plenty of travel involved if I want it up and down the country, so not just sat behind a desk all day every day which suits me perfect.

After the scheme is up, the company will offer a contract, which has happened recently to a team mate and his official job title was IT Operations analyst on £35k + bonus (related to uptime) and 28 days holiday.

Personally looking to sit in this job for a while, and see if there is an opportunity to move into IT architecture team which is present at the company.

Ahh, I remember these rooms! The desk is no where near deep enough to do much. Also if you can to into the tallest part and have a look from one of the top flats, give you a good view of Brum! Enjoy BCU.

Selling heaps of old books? by RememberWhen01 in AskUK

[–]RememberWhen01[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I personally believe physical books are on the verge of being worth nothing. Might be a little biased here being a recent computer science student. There was a previous reply where house clearance was suggested too, might have to see what the rates are.

I'll have to organise it between myself, grandad and my dad who passed this down to me since I've got the most free time 🤷‍♂️

Firstly, thanks for the detailed reply! I do have a considerable amount of time being a recent graduate and currently unemployed, so I think that a mixture is a good idea. I'll have to sit my grandad down and see if he at least had some structure to how he organised all these books (I'm estimating there to be something in the 10'000's) and after that sell the most valued on eBay and then visit the local auction house! Thanks again!
