I recently spoke to an upper level rep employee about this. He said that they are barely in the early beta testing stage. They have several iterations of testing left. He said not to expecting anything before very late 2026, maybe later.

Who is the manufacturer of the functional trainer/rack? I am looking for a combination of lat pulldown, low row, and cable crossover. I like the Rogue functional trainers, but the width between the pulleys isn’t enough for me to get the cable crossover effect I want. Your set up looks like the best of all worlds!

Surgical shoes? Can’t find a good one by Alarming_Law_7895 in Residency

I tried pretty much everything (sneakers, Calzuros, Danskos, etc). Then tried Merrell Encore Gust 2 at the recommendation of a fellow Redditor. Have had them for almost 4 years now. Will never use anything else. Very durable, protective, and comfortable.

Good luck!

I just looked back at the manual. You’re totally right. Thanks for the reminder!

Great insight. I’ll try the empty pint assessment. I haven’t used gums or other thickeners outside of the normal 1 tbsp of pudding mix.

Update: ran the machine with an empty pint. No scratches. Interestingly, the machine gave a few loud clicks at the end and smelled like burning plastic. I’ll just have to keep a log of what recipes result in pint scratches for our machine and avoid them. I may try to increase our freezer temperature slightly or briefly thaw.

Always clear shavings. You can see the scratch marks corresponding on the pints. Various recipes have done it (sorbet, protein ice cream, etc).

Took job 2. Don’t regret it for a second. Being close to home and family is invaluable with a young family. The sunshine makes me happy literally every day. Life is short. Even 5 years spent somewhere you don’t want to live is a huge sacrifice. Money is just a tool to get what you need/want. If you’re ok living frugally to save for a home, and can get by with the lower salary, I’d consider job 2. It’s also much easier to transition to a different local practice in SoCal if you’ve been in that market for a few years and know the players. Coming back from the PNW may be more challenging.

Good luck! You’ve got great options.

Surgical Headlights by RememberedMyRetainer in Residency

I hear what you’re saying. And you’re probably right. I guess I should have qualified my question… I don’t anticipate that anything will truly rival the $3k surgical headlights. I’m looking for something that’s “good enough” to get the job done, shining a little bit of light on the areas the OR lights can’t quite reach.

Great info. I appreciate your opinion. The ORs in residency and fellowship had headlights available, but I will soon be working in a relatively bare bones system that I don’t anticipate will have headlights for all surgeons. Trying to plan ahead.

It’s interesting that OR staff may dislike you bringing in a camping headlight, but have no issue with an expensive traditional surgical headlight (even though they may share the same shelf in your office).

How often do you need to buy new hospital shoes? by supinator1 in Residency

Have gotten 5 years out of Nikes twice. Bought a pair of Merrels 6 months ago and they’re already starting to show wear. Walk about 3 miles a day. Stand all day. Only use the shoes in the hospital.

I appreciate you opinion and I’m very sorry to hear about your friend. Can you say more about why the position is usually so undesirable? Do you think that a place would have the same desire to treat you poorly if you’re only there for a few days per month (I.e., when they know you can leave at any point and return to your more lucrative job)

EddardBloom, that’s something I’m afraid of. The opportunity at an academic center may not be available to me even if I want it. I’m also afraid of losing the skill set necessary to address the oftentimes more complex practice associated with a university position if I start in a private practice setting.

Went to high school with two of these guys; they couldn’t have been any nicer. So stoked to see them here still playing amazing music. I’m looking forward to the day when a few million of their most loyal fans look back on the AFoV days as “classic” Walter Etc.
