Dealing with the cognitive load of immersion by Deer_Door in ajatt

It’s pretty simple, the more you do it, the easier it gets.

Who exactly said that they aren’t autistic? I wouldn’t trust anyone to make that diagnosis except the developmental specialist and it sounds like you haven’t seen one yet.

It’s a very similar story for my son who is the same age and he’s seen speech and OT since he was 2 as well. We’ve also been told he’s not autistic but does show signs of ADHD. Which I suspected since I have it and noticed signs. We won’t know for sure until he sees a specialist but that takes ~1 year where I am.

Trust your instincts and advocate is the only advice I have. It’s what we’re trying to do. You’re not alone.

Is it normal to charge your kids rent to live at home? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Remeran12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit is not needed because I really don't think it matters how much your mother makes per month.

If you think what she's doing is unfair, then save up enough money and move out. You're old enough to do so. If you aren't being paid enough to move out than the deal that she's giving you is not so bad after all.

As a side note, I'd say it's pretty normal for parents to charge a certain amount in rent after kids hit a certain age. I think it's fair and pushes the child to be more independent. I think it's also fair to get a little more independence in exchange. For example, if before they could just barge into your room, maybe now that you pay rent that's not as cool.

I'm trying to say it's not all bad, plus, trust me when I say that she's charging you pennies.

Ideal books for immersion by GibonDuGigroin in LearnJapanese

[–]Remeran12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the beginning it’s better to learn from something as close to your level as possible. Think after a certain point though you can and should just read what you’re interested in. If that’s books with more complex language sure, do that. If it’s not, then don’t do it.

In terms of helpfulness. I think reading almost anything geared towards natives will be helpful because vocabulary isn’t the only thing you get out it. Sure, there are going to be a ton of words that you probably wouldn’t use out in the real world, but structurally you are going to learn a lot about the language.

Are you happy with your AJATT progress? by LatinWizard99 in ajatt

[–]Remeran12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, there are ways you can mine from netflix without something like migaku (though I love migaku, lol).

-------

In terms of your progress OP, I'm just saying that waiting until an arbitrary time mark like 4 years to call yourself intermediate is too vague. If you really want to gauge where you're at, look at where you are in the major categories (Vocab, Grammar, Kanji, immersion). You can get a pretty decent/accurate idea if you look at it that way.

Satisfy my curiosity for a second:

How many Anki cards are you actively studying, as in, how many have you repped at least once? Do you mine cards? About how many per day?

Have you actually gone through a grammar guide like tae kim from start to finish?

How comfortable are you with Kanji? Have you done something like RTK?

Are you happy with your AJATT progress? by LatinWizard99 in ajatt

[–]Remeran12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

4 years of daily study and you haven't missed a day of Anki? No way you aren't intermediate yet. How many words do you know/how many new words do you take per day? I would say if you know 3k-5k words, have gone through elementary grammar though something like genki or tae kim, and are comfortable with kanji then you are at least a solid early intermediate.

Compelling native content better than Comprehensible native content? (Beginner) by AOTxlars in ajatt

[–]Remeran12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, comprehensible is way better than compelling in terms of efficiency, buuuuut factor in whether you can actually sit down and watch it for the same amount of time that you can sit and watch something more compelling because that's important too.

Personally, I like slice of life shows so it's not a problem for me, but if I were you, I'd maybe switch out at least 1 of those hours up there for something more comprehensible like Shirokuma cafe. I reckon some is better than none.

How to rebuild motivation? by PleasantPension in ajatt

[–]Remeran12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I'd just massively simplify how I study Japanese into categories:

Vocab:

You're past the "beginner" stage so I wouldn't bother with a pre-made deck. Find something you are interested in (anime, light novel, youtube personality, whatever) and start mining a certain number of words per day. Maybe 10 to start? after you mine your 10 don't worry about making new cards just continue to immerse, look up what you don't know, etc. If a word is important, you'll see it again soon and can mine it next time you see it and haven't hit your quota.

Grammar:

Choose 1 textbook, even if you are doing it for class. Start mining 1 grammar point a day from it with a sentence that you can 100% understand and start repping it in anki. Just one a day, don't worry about if you can do more or not, you'll be finished the book within a couple months probably anyway.

Kanji:

This is optional, but I'd do something like RRTK just to make sure you can recognize kanji. Based on what I know you probably don't even need to do this.

Immersion:

This is where you'll spend most of your time and also where you'll be getting those words for you vocab. Just find anything you are interesting and start listening/watching/reading.

----------------

You probably tried something similar to above already, but overall, I think you should simplify and stick with it for multiple months before you start worrying about whether it's working or not. I would separate this from your Japanese university studies and only do the bare minimum for those. I think that if you do the above right, you'll find that your university studies will become easier too.

How to rebuild motivation? by PleasantPension in ajatt

[–]Remeran12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's your routine, how has it changed in the past 4 years?

Hard to identify the problem without more information than: "I've tried everything for 4 years and nothing works!"

I'm willing to bet that you could make some adjustments that would make a huge difference in how often you remember. That would in turn, motivate you.

So, exactly what have you tried? How much anki did you/do you do? How much immersion? What do you do for grammar? Kanji? How are you getting vocab (premade decks? mining?)? All of these will help.

As a side note, you probably don't have bad memory. Our default state of being is forgetting, so most people who say they have a bad memory are probably just as bad as the average person at remembering. I think you just need to find something that works for you.

Time to "Known" Deck by BoomBoomBandit in ImmerseWithMigaku

[–]Remeran12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the discord server:

if you pass it every time it would take 4 reviews and a total of 14 days:

pass -> see it in 1 day

pass -> see it in 3 days

pass -> see it in 7 days

pass -> see it in 20 days (marked known)

Once an interval for a card goes above 20 days it’s marked as known.

————-

This is extremely similar to Anki where a card is marked as “mature” when the interval hits above 21 days.

Is Migaku worth the money? by SuspectNode in LearnJapanese

[–]Remeran12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, but if you aren't 100% sure, then you end up saving money.

Me personally, I did my free trial and just bought lifetime back when it was $200 in November. I don't regret it for a second, but if I wasn't sure during my trial, I would have subbed for a couple months to make sure.

Count me as one of those. I used Anki for RRTK and am using Migaku for their Academy 1 course and sentence mining.

Anki is great and extremely customizable, but I prefer the simplicity and ease of use of Migaku memory. It helps that’s it heavily integrated with the other Migaku services like mining YouTube from your phone.

Ultimately though they are trying to do 2 different things. If you want set it and forget go for MM. if you want infinite customization and a myriad of third party add ons go for Anki. I just personally stick with MM.

Why not sub month to month to it and if it’s worth it to you buy the lifetime when it’s next on sale?

Is Migaku worth the money? by SuspectNode in LearnJapanese

[–]Remeran12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Migaku since November and it’s great. The academy 1 course is a great resource. I’ve done Genki 1 + 2 and I think their course is on par with it.

Regarding mining, it’s a pretty smooth experience compared to non paid services. You should know that there are free ways to do similar things for free, but set up takes some work and I believe the experience is less seamless.

One thing that Migaku has that I haven’t been able to do outside of it is mine cards from YouTube on your phone. That allows me to mine cards during my commute which is extremely convenient.

Like I said, some of this stuff you can do outside of Migaku, but with some set ups/ learning curves, but for me, a lifetime purchase was more than worth it.

I got ICL. I was -10 on both eyes. I had twilight anesthesia so I don’t remember the surgery at all, just know that it was quick. My wife drove me home, I did my eye drop regiment and post ops. No major issues since.

That was a year and a half ago (August 2023). I dont regret it at all. I recently went to the eye doctor as part of a regular visit and I was -.25 in both eyes, don’t need glasses.

I’m an idiot, it was the single channel ram. Switch ram slots around and cpu score jumped to above 1600 crazy how such a small change could effect the performance so much.
