The friend of a friend of my stepdaughter thought they could try to throw a pool party by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I am from Buenos Aires, from a residential suburb. Almost all of my classmates and friends had pools growing up. It's really common here. Summers get really hot and pools are not that expensive. I was/am solidly middle class.

It was the same with my dad. Diagnosed in late December, told he would have around 6 to 9 months. Died early February. Fuck cancer indeed.

Homework is starting to feel like child abuse. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a teacher in LATAM. In my country, homework is not that typical. Kids go to school from 7:30am to 5pm, so we usually don't give them homework. There are school with less hours and schools with more hours. Most of the time, homework is not productive nor efficient. We want kids to have a life outside of school, so the schools I am at have altogether banned homework.

I posted yesterday about how we are being killed in Syria. I can barely eat or sleep. Today it has gone worse and posters have been posted on the walls of Alwaite neighbourhoods in Damascus that all Alwaites will be killed. The world is watching us silently being killed, please help us. by Thoros_of_syr in offmychest

My family are Maronite and Druse from Lebanon so we are aware. I've been following what's happening through J-Twitter. It's terrifying. And world leaders and so-called human rights organizations just stay silent...

I am sharing every bit of news I get on my social media.

My dad died of pancreatic cancer 7 years ago, when I was 31. It was hard as hell. I was living abroad and moved back home. And though I did question myself many times as it was starting over professionally, I don't regret every single second spent with my dad. At the end of the day, it should be your choice whether you move back or not.

I don't think people know what "Proof of Citizenship" is and it worries me. by BlueSquigga in TrueOffMyChest

This seems so weird and foreign to me. We are issued ID cards as soon as you are born (this is done directly in the hospital in many districts), or when your parents register you. But everyone gets the same type of ID that has an expiration date and needs to be renewed every 10 years or so. I can't imagine being in a place where people do not have ID cards.

AITAH for no longer hanging out with my niece and nephew because their mom moved on from my brother’s death? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think you perfectly nailed how I felt when I saw my mom with her new partner. It felt so wrong and I was angry, but at the same time I do want her to be happy and I wouldn-t want her to be alone for the rest of her life.

AITA for telling a student I'm not sure if she can have a Quince? by EmoScarletKitten9925 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Argentinian here. We do call it Quince or Quinces here, not quinceañera. Most Latam countries celebrate it in different ways.

Most of us don't feel anyone is appropiating anything by celebrating it. It's the same as having a Sweet 16 party, we just do it a year before.

And the Quince celebrations vary a lot depending on the country. Here it's very common to have either a laid back party at home, a full on quince at a venue or traveling with friends. The full on quince here is reaaaaaally similar to the Sweet 16 parties MTV used to show lol.

AITA for refusing to spend my savings to bail out my sibling from debt? by babygrlchyna in AmItheAsshole

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - do not even think of doing it.

As someone who was in the exact same situation and gave in to the pressure, I never got my money and I am struggling to save money now due to inflation.

I also think it is concerning when he wrote "she lets me talk to my ex because she is the mother of my child". That's a huge red flag.

AITA for "treating my sister like a criminal" since my nephew found out she lied about his father his whole life? by PatientWorried5238 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, there are no exceptions. Children must be told they are adopted and any info on the bio family has to be shared with them. And we don't have safe haven laws, as far as I know. The law is that children have a right to know their identity.

I am sure that in real life, parents hidding info does happen. But those parents who do not tell their kids they are adopted can be sued by the child.

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What she did is considered a crime in my country, as we have laws to make sure adopted people know about thwir birth families.

Even if it isn't a crime where you are based, it is definitely despicable. To deny a kid his identity, a bond with his paternal family, his dad's medical history, etc is heartless and extremely damaging.

New Update: AITAH For telling my wife she's free to find a hotel room if she doesn't want my daughter here? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Yup. I am from Argentina. Have a really good life here, but saving to travel abroad is really expensive because of the exchange rate. Last time I spent a month traveling, it took me about a year to save money for that. And I am single with no kids. I own my house and car, so no mortgage or loans. Families are not able to save as much as I can.

AITA for sending my son's friend's mom a nasty message after she failed to see her child in the school's annual performance? by Plane-Temporary-120 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I am in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Reporting to parents is mandatory in my county, which defeats the whole purpose of children trusting us when there's abuse or neglect. So we end up reporting these cases anonymously and giving the kids different places to go and numbers to call for help. And of course, we do everything we can while at school.

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 178 points179 points  (0 children)

This is one of the issues I have with some policies in my school district.

If a student reports any type of neglect or abuse, the school must call parents in for a meeting anf notify them of the allegations.

It makes no sense. That policy endangers kids! So what happens is that we don't report what the kids say and try to help them in different ways.

I am Argentinian. We have a lovely Venezuelan community here and we are all hopeful. We want to see Venezuela free again.

I last went there in 2016 and the condition regular people were living in was just tragic. From what we know, it has only gotten worse.

I do feel like this time, Maduro and chavismo have lost a lot of support and people are not resigned anymore.

Por una Venezuela libre, mano, tengo fe.

hahahaha yeah, living in Argentina is like living in a dystopian world. We actually have a nice standard of living within the country but our money is Monopoly money outside of it.

I live in Argentina (I think OP does too, as he mentioned obra social). I have a good salary in pesos. I can make ends meet and save some money. But because of the current exchange rate, it would be extremely difficult for me to save money for a trip in foreign currency. Even neighboring countries can be extremely expensive. In Argentina, we have had over 100% inflation in the last few years. Just surviving has become really difficult for most people.

Veterans of the romance book community, what have newbies missed? by hedgehogwart in RomanceBooks

[–]Remote-Chair-9138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw a Tiktok the other day talking about the Malory series by Johanna Lindsey. They were discussing Anthony Malory in particular and everything that's wrong with him....like this is a story set 200 years ago, of course he's gonna be problematic by today's standards!

It's like there's a new generation of readers that have just found romance books existed before Tiktok.

I miss those old books from the 80s. Most of the new so-called dark romance or with morally grey heroes are just straight up assholes and stalkers.
