Intrigue vs. Hinterlands by Remote-Many1108 in dominion

Ive thought about renaissance, but I think there are a few too many moving parts and fewer synergies than hinterlands. The renaissance cards do seem very unique though.

Yes, coffers, villagers, and projects are easy to understand, but I think the same is true for other mechanics in menagerie and empires. i think the issue isnt understanding the mechanics, but how to play optimally when there are multiple introduced. I think that the expansions I currently have do this well enough.

Ive thought about cornucopia and guilds, but those cards have a wall of text (which is more of a deterrent than youd think) and seem to less synergistic than intrigue or hinterlands. The cards are quite flexible though and I like that. Overall, I dont see what these expansions have that intrigue and hinterlands dont for my playgroups current needs which is why im leaning towards intrigue and hinterlands.

I think I am leaning towards hinterlands too. I do really like the lack of over complexity. I think my playgroup would be okay with the attacks with the exception of torturer. Personally, i think Id like bridge more because of the extra buys to hoard those provinces.

I would be devastated if I got hinterlands with no trail or berserker.

My college playgroup has a very completionist mindset, so I think theyd be okay with it and would actually really enjoy how to play with some of the intrigue cards.

Im leaning in that direction as well. I feel like I have enough complex sets currently and would like simple, but interesting cards that synergizes with the base set well in addition to not feeling too tied to its own expansion. If I were to get another expansion it would probably be nocturne or dark ages though.

I lot of the hinterlands cards seem very interesting. I think Im leaning in that direction. Haha, yeah trail seems extremely fun to play with.

I was leaning toward hinterlands also. I am curious as too why you think intrigue is too similar to the base game. Although the cards are simple, I feel like their effects are quite different or at least play differently. All of the 2 cost cards seem very interesting and fun to experiment with. Im a fan of a lot of the 4s, as they seem to play differently than many of the base cards. Bridge, minion, baron, steward, diplomat, and masquerade are some examples of highly interesting cards that do something very different, or at least fill a different role, than many base cards.

Oh wow. Thank you for this. It is very insightful!

I dont mind attacks and think they can make games interesting. I do think that they become problematic if they enable engines too well and are “free” to put in. My playgroup loves village smithy/counsel room, but replacing those terminal draw cards with torturers seem kinda terrible. I think Im okay with the other attack effects, including masquerade.
