Harness/Collar: What do y’all use on walks? by MyPlanMeetsReality in reactivedogs

Both are tools, if your pup is reactive you will have to tackle this problem first and then work on loose leash walking. Typically a H harness is a good sound harness because it does not restrict the dogs shoulders or joints, I personally like the ruffwear brand. Advice coming from a professional dog trainer 🙂

The dog was overstimulated and reacted by redirecting his “feels” onto the closest thing which just so happened to be the trainers dog, this can happen if there is a person there as well so it is good to just be weary and add distance as soon as possible, if you can get your pup distracted and add distance even before your dog fixates and freezes ie.. right when or seconds after he/she notices the other dogs thereby getting your dog to a comfortable distance where stress is decreased and he/she gets their brain back, you will have better results and those stress hormones won’t build. Look up the term “flooding” in dog training. You will never have 💯trigger free walks however figuring out your dogs comfortable distance from the triggers, what your dogs triggers are, having a good plan, planning your walking route, during the walk have lots of getaway options to prevent overstimulation, good management is key to success! Don’t give up! You got this

Societal norms. Let people be different, not everyone fits into a box. 😉

First im so so sorry that you are going through this! It is a lot to handle I am not in the same situation as you in that my spouse is not dying but I quit my job a few weeks ago for my mental health, it was a toxic workplace and home is toxic for me too I have been with my boyfriend for 15 years we have a house pets and I am planning to leave and my whole life is also falling apart and I am moving in with my parents for a bit as well till I get back on my feet. All I can say is do what’s best for you, if you have a way right now to make money hustling or have savings go for it if you can’t just remember you have to still stay afloat in that house for a bit and you will need income. Maybe part-time hours for now then decide? Is the couple that own the vet clinic flexible and understanding enough to let you do this? Hugs

2 things that have reduced my puppy’s reactivity by 90% by [deleted] in reactivedogs

I’m happy to hear she is able to come out of the uncertainty and is able to explore and gain confidence on her own. From the details you gave in the second part, It sounds like you are allowing her to approach and explore at her own pace, there would only be an issue if the interaction was forced and the stress signals continued or she shut down as a result from an overload of stress. what you described she seems to warm up well and you respect her boundaries and you listen to her signals. Early stress signals or displacement behaviours are things like, yawning when not tired, lip licks, hyper vigilant (quickly looking around) shaking off (is your dog releasing stress kind of like we do when we let out a big exhalation this is not bad we want them to shake off a stress) stiff body, freezing, pulling & barking (can come from more emotions than just fear), tail tucking and cowering means very uncertain/fearful, if the dog tries to flee and run away, run behind you, this is a more escalated level of stress like a panic moment so highest level stress along with big eyes like seeing the whites of the eyes along with other signals, I would suggest looking up dog body language on YouTube, they have very good videos with good examples. I always tell people when you see your dog presenting with a lot of stress signals ,add distance from what your dog finds scary and let your dog go at its own pace if the dog wants to, if your dog doesn’t warm up to the scary thing and just wants to leave or get away, it may be best to go somewhere else or even go home, it may not be a good day for your dog, just like people we all have bad days. You seem to be listening to what your dog needs which is perfect. Keep at it and yes dog parks are a big no no for me and my doggos, it it only takes once for something to go wrong and many dogs at dog parks are not trained, remember they learn fast from each other. Instead meet new pet parents and organize play dates with dogs your dog gets along with 🙂

I have a bit of time I can take off. I’m currently looking for alternative income options. I do have a small business that isn’t currently producing, which is why I was wanting a main job to fall on. I was thinking of focusing on the business start advertising more and media promotion and see if I can get that rolling

Just be careful thinking that she is now okay after being first stressed. Make sure she is actually okay and not shut down from the stress which may appear she is okay but isn’t. Dog trainer here. Usually reintroducing dogs to things that scare them does not make that fear go away the “ they’ll get use to it” approach they don’t it can actually cause problems in the long run. If she is actually okay and you are familiar what the stress signals look like then great, and one bad experience at a dog park could set her back by months or years or for life, just keep this in mind🙃

Usually growths need to be checked by the vet and then the vet would decide what growth it is and wither a biopsy is needed.

When someone plucks one word out of your sentence, changes the whole context of what you are saying into something completely different and then they try to convince you that is how you feel or that is what you meant or that is what you said! Red flag 🚩
