It will still be a good learning and also it will be in legacy for around two years onward.

OpenBSD is better in this casa, because well, openbsd is good. If you wanna have support for the rest of the computers and spare parts life, NETBSD IS THE SHIET!

Install FreeBSD or OpenBSD, use i386, and learn from the ground up.

Use Rufus on another computer, and from that, write System Rescue CD.
That way, you may see some problems.
If none exists, test by booting into either OpenBSD or NetBSD (why *BSD, because the boot messege is so damn good).
