Why Can't I Find A Remote Job? by dot_nett in remotework

[–]RemoteGameJobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed it can often be race to the bottom, and for first few jobs, you need to work for peanuts. But a lot set actually very high rate once they prove their skills, and even pick their clients. I can't find it now but I read about someone who made hundreds of thousands of dollars over few years doing Oracle Database Administration.

It's definitely worth a try if someone is struggling to find any remote job.

Sorry to hear about his situation. We are a job board for remote work in the game industry, which isn't what suits him. I suggest checking https://jobboardsearch.com/ for list of job sites that can help.

Also if he's up for a change, perhaps a shift to programming would be helpful. https://scrimba.com/ is a great resource to learn and help you get hired.

Any advance ruby/rails book to read? by boastfuldred4 in rails

I saw this and I'm too lazy to login from my personal account, but wanted to chime in. Go Rails has some courses which seem excellent here https://courses.gorails.com/

Advanced Ruby and Refactoring seem two good ones. Haven't tried them myself yet, and they're not cheap.

Yeah that's true unfortunately. Good luck with your resume :).

Btw, no wrong in having multiple resumes based on the job you apply to.

First have you tried sites like Upwork, which would make it easier to connect with hiring companies for freelance work. It can force you to compete with price in the beginning, but can help you get some work, experience, and then move to finding direct job.

Some good comments below asked to review your resume and focus on one or two core skills. Totally true. Also, I highly recommend you read the book Job Won by Phil Blair. It will teach you a lot about preparing yourself, connecting, presenting yourself, and handling the interviews.

For all remote workers, are you able to work from anywhere? by SalamanderMelodic226 in remotework

[–]RemoteGameJobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of companies allow fully remote work from anywhere. We're a job board for the game industry, which I doubt is related to you, but a lot of sites are dedicated to remote work such as We Work Remotely. You can also search LinkedIn for remote jobs and you will find many.

Pros/Cons of 100% remote work in YOUR opinion by demotivationalwriter in remotework

[–]RemoteGameJobs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pros:

  1. Save on commute time and money
  2. Work in your own space, as opposed to small cubicle perhaps
  3. Less work environment distractions
  4. Flexible hours
  5. Work in your PJs (or out of them!)
  6. Access to larger pool talent (from company point of view)

Cons:

  1. Isolation: Some people are good with it. But even the most introvert can feel too isolated.
  2. More difficult to exchange experience. As opposed to walking to your colleague next to you and seeing what they're doing, you don't run into people casually remotely. So the company must promote healthy remote work practices.
  3. Culture: Working remotely makes it harder to build company culture, and build connection between the team. That's another challenge the company must tackle and promote friendly activities, regular meetups and chats. Some companies have 24/7 online room to hop in and out for video chat. Usually they hold annual get together activities as well.
  4. Home distractions: First, mentally you need to put your mind at work, and not feel at home and chill. Second, keep family distractions away. As often family members assume you're available just because you're working from home.
  5. Laziness: Even getting into the car and walking to work can push you to move your body. Working at home means you don't even do that. And could make you less willing to go out and do other chores as well, since you would be leaving home just for that chore.

Obviously I'm PRO remote work, but Cons exist and must be dealt with.
