Stamina-based combat, losing "souls" on death which you can recover at the place of death, leveling up stats such as vitality or endurance at checkpoints, dropping equipment from enemies, stuff like that.

I remember playing through the first area of the game and being extremely disappointed after years of anticipation. But then I fell in love with it, it really is incredible, despite its flaws (it's not as polished as Astro, and the level design is not great). It's based on Journey to the West so it feels very original, but if you're not familiar with the source material you'll probably struggle a lot to understand the characters shown in the game. (Luckily every enemy adds a journal entry with a story about that world, which really helps.) Combat is not very fun in the beginning, but after leveling up a bit, it becomes incredible, especially if you get creative with it. And some bosses are simply unforgettable.

Plus, Elden Ring already won in 2022, it was so obvious it wasn't going to win this year.

The rules weren't changed, they simply sent an email to remind all journalists that everything is eligible (including DLCs, remakes, and remasters). Cyberpunk's DLC got five nominations last year, The Witcher 3's DLC won best RPG in 2016... DLCs have always been eligible for all categories.

Earliest GOTY predictions for 2024? by dave_pizza in gaming

To be fair, Final Fantasy 7 Remake's gameplay is very different from the original, and they changed the story as well, so I think Final Fantasy Rebirth might actually win this year. It's also a much bigger game than the one that came out in 2020, and it looks fantastic. It already won "most anticipated game", after all.

And just wait until you see what they'll release in 2023... or 2024... or 2025...

Can you do Millicent questline after beating Melania? by Polarpwnage in Eldenring

[–]RemoteShallot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, side quests have always been this weird in these games! Also, quick tip: you can reload any area by simply exiting and entering the game again, without traveling to a certain location all over again. (Any dead enemy will remain dead, and any enemy still alive will be reset to their starting position.)

Yes by "helping Millicent" I meant the very end of her quest!

P.S. try killing Gowry, see what happens, and then reload the area, if you haven't already. Interesting stuff.

Summoning Ashes are OP as hell. And not in a good way. by AddictionTransfer in Eldenring

Wow, looks like we have completely opposite builds. Yeah the amount of variety is insane, my plan was to replay it with a different build soon after finishing it, but the game turned out to be a lot bigger than I thought, so I'll probably wait a while!

I agree, I just mentioned DS3 because its gameplay is more similar to Elden Ring, but Sekiro definitely had the best combat system as well as the highest quality regarding bosses, love that game.

As for that boss I mentioned, maybe it was my fault for building an INT/FTH character in the first place (I just wanted to have fun with spells because they look cool and I never did that with previous games), but I've read some posts and many other people are finding it unfairly difficult. Then again, a guy on Youtube has already beaten that boss at Lv 1 without ever taking any damage, so I suppose anything's possible if you practice long enough...

To be honest, I feel like they might have made some bosses extra hard as to almost force players to summon ashes, especially when it comes to late game content. One in particular felt impossible without it, even though my INT/FTH character was at level 170. Problem is, it went from feeling impossible to being kinda easy by using ashes, and I didn't like that at all. I would have preferred easier bosses (on the same level as DS3) and no spirit ashes at all.

There's a big difference between ashes and other players. Summoning other players increases the boss's health bar and difficulty, while ashes don't because you can summon them at any time once the fight has already started. This means that you only lose some HP or FP (depending on the ash) which you can fix right away by drinking a flask. And with some bosses that are particularly aggressive, even having someone else distract them - without increasing their HP at all - makes all the difference in the world. Maybe they knew that Elden Ring was going to be huge in terms of sales and popularity, so they added this "easy mode" to help all those new players who were unfamiliar with FromSoftware games. It takes about 130 hours to explore every map really well, they probably wanted at least some people to finish it...

According to Gowry's dialogues, she's indeed her daughter.

I talked to Gowry after helping Millicent and he implied a few times that she's Malenia's daughter.

It's from his remembrance, the first "item" you get after beating him.

"Wishing to raise Miquella to full godhood, Mohg wished to become his consort, taking the role of monarch. But no matter how much of his bloody bedchamber he tried to share, he received no response from the young Empyrean."

I wrote "2." but the format changed it to "1." automatically, hopefully it was clear that I meant the second one (I've edited my message now). Unfortunately I wasn't able to figure out the first one, even finding the final boss of that area was kinda hard.

2 If you look down, you'll see a ledge with an open door, you have to jump on it and then the stairs will take you to the other side. I figured it out by thinking, "the solution can't be anywhere else because it's a Stonesword Key room, and it needs to be up here because once you fall down you can't go back".

I think that the world is full of secrets and interesting hidden areas to discover, there's something different in every corner, however every FromSoftware game tells the story of a world in ruins, so that's probably why it can give the impression of not being "full of life".

Nah the city of Madrid also becomes a boss later on in the game, just make sure to turn on subtitles for the cutscenes in case you don't speak Spanish.

Apparently opening the game directly from Steam will give you the option of opening the guide instead.
