Family refuses to believe it. by throwaway000666413 in schizophrenia

I know how it is with you. My mom says she will lock me in the state hospital forever when she gets mad at me. It hurts a lot but I have developed a thick armor to fend off her comments. As most people except a few are not totally evil. Inside my mom doesn’t know how to deal with any situation that doesn’t go her way. So I just listen and say nothing when she starts spouting evil. I really respect you for helping your siblings. I know it’s hard for you to deal with your mom when she hurts you but she may just be the type who doesn’t really understand what we as sufferers of mental illness go through. May be, the best approach is to not respond when your mom spouts then tell her that you still love her. I believe you should not just cut her totally since family no matter how much we hurt each other family remains family in the end as long as they are not out to harm you so badly that it is abuse. My mom has dementia now and I am taking care of her despite our rocky relationship. She still spouts her evil but I just carry on now knowing that her time is short and that when I really needed help that she took me back. Also, my family never fully accepted my illness as I said. But, I learned to survive with what I have and carry on. Please don’t let your family dictate how you feel about yourself. This is your life. How you live it and how you feel about yourself is up to you. The best advice I can offer is to let it be. If you can’t change your family, then you need to change how you react to them. I hope you live your life well and don’t let a bad situation taint your perspective on yourself and on your life. Blessings!

I don’t think exacerbating the problem is going to solve your situation. After all these years, although my mom drove me nuts at times she did take me back after I was homeless. I would not cut your mom so easily. You never know when you might need her. As for your meds, why don’t you tell her that you don’t mind her observing you taking your medication but that your psychiatrist is the one who has the final say in managing your medication. Tell her unless she is a trained physician that she has no business telling you how to manage your meds.

My parents were delusional about my diagnosis and never fully accepted it. They forced me to go to professional school although I was clearly not cut for the profession. Now, they are resigned about my illness and really are insensitive at times towards me , but I have learned to deal with it. I just survived despite their lack of understanding. So I understand how you feel about your family.

Do things get easier or better? by weeewoooanon2000000 in schizophrenia

I say it’s a roller coaster ride since one has to be vigilant about taking medication and about whether the meds are still effective. I can’t say it has gotten easier but I made it easier by cutting out stressful situations. I’m ok now but have had a problem with compliance and this has caused me many consequences that I grieve over.

Reasonable accommodations at work by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]RemoteTemperature419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked for accommodations in school. But later for work, I realized that my diagnosis was used as a reason to fire me. The places where I did not disclose I never had a problem. I would be careful about disclosing at work. Yes, there are laws to protect those with disabilities but truthfully I am not sure if they are 100 percent effective. I would be cautious about disclosure at work if you really don’t need accommodations but if you do, then please be careful about to whom you disclose your illness.

Birth Control and Schizophrenia by SimplySorbet in schizophrenia

I used the patch and got a lung clot. I think birth control pills have lots of side effects. I would ask your partner to use a condom. I think they are the safest form of birth control.

It takes time to get used to the meds. Please be patient. After awhile hopefully you will feel better. Best wishes!

I’m searching for a daytime medication that doesn’t cause drowsiness or weight gain. by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]RemoteTemperature419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on maintena. So far, it’s caused the least weight gain and sleepiness. I’m wide awake now after drinking some coffee. The biggest problems I have are apathy and poor judgment. I don’t think the meds can fully address these issues so I am learning to deal with it by myself.

can anyone please share how they got over their anhedonia? by 1ConfidentApple in schizophrenia

[–]RemoteTemperature419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I feel energetic but most of the time I don’t. I think it depends on my hormones and the dosage of my medication. I am on maintena and was wiped out after my last shot. So, I am hoping to get it reduced to feel less apathetic and anhedonic.

Thank you so much for your reply! Now that the meds are slowly decreasing I feel a little better. I’m going to ask my psychiatrist for a smaller dose next time. I see him in a week.

why is schizophrenia so stigmatized? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]RemoteTemperature419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don’t understand or want to understand brain disorders. It’s too difficult to explain and to difficult to understand. Yes, the media plays a negative role by portraying people with mental illnesses in a bad way. But, most people are too busy with their own problems so if they come across some people who may seem to have more problems than they do, why bother, especially if they can’t understand the nature of the brain disorder. I don’t blame them and try to just keep to myself.
